THE TREND OF THINGS.
The charge made by young Russell against
Judge Tanner, that he has recently become In
volved in polygamy may or may not be true. On
its face it looks true for it seems to be frankly
' made and the denial of Tanner sounds like those
i answers made by accused people who have been
ll instructed by their attorneys to be careful and
11 not say anything to criminate themselves.
I It is in the air that the word has gone out that
B. there must be no more polygamous marriages, but
S that being sealed for eternity is permissible, and
1 the names of many high officials in the church,
I one an apostle, are bruited about as men who
S have recently undertaken to save the souls of
n certain females in that way. Of course that is
K polygamy under the law and the reason is direct
B enough. If a woman believes that a certain old
B ruff-scuff is going to be a fraction of a husband
B for her beyond the pearly gates, she will ncces-
w sarily be subject to his desires in this world. That
'IB men accused of this are not altogether disinter-
fl ested in the business of saving female souls is
W reasonably apparent from tho fact that they nev-
er select old girls whose souls are liable to need
B a certificate of character up above at almost any
time, but they invariably select young, and, if pos
S sible, beautiful girls, to secure an immortality of
B glory for. When accomplished and danger is
B threatened we see a similar performance to that
iB witnessed by the hunters on Antelope Island last
IB Sunday when the prettiest buffalo plural tried to
B shield the old bull of the herd from harm. It is al
1 togetlier a lovely system, is it not?
ft Matters appear to be drifting back substantial.
B ly to the position of the old days, except under a
B different pretense. Places have been selected in
B Oregon and Colorado where children to polyga-
H mous wives are born; the records of marriage.?, of
B course, are only known to a few of the faithful;
B all interested are ready to commit any kind of
B perjury to "further the cause of the Lord," and
B Mormon jurors never could receive evidence
B enough to convict a man who had done nothing
B worse than to obey a command of God, on which
B obedience, the full exaltation of his soul depended.
B And this is in the twentieth century and of the
B independence of the colonies the one hundred and
K twenty-fifth year.
KB The worst give-away for Tanner appears in an
B editorial in the News of Thursday last. It is a full
column in length, but reduced to plain English Its
substance is:
First -We have not before spoken because the
matter was not sooner hushed up.
Second Young Russell has been squelched, so
there is no more danger from that sour.ee.
Third It is wicked for Gentile newspapers to
publish statements, charging crime, made by a
Mormon against a Mormon.
Fourth Every man is innocent until proven
guilty. We have got things fixed; now let any
Gentile prove the charges or keep still.
Fifth The President of the church has not
given his consent for any man or woman to enter
a polygamous marriage state, hence there could
have been no such marriage. (Mere apostles do not
count.)
Sixth If Mormon people know anything to
criminate a brother Mormon, let such keep still,
especially if they do know something.
Selah.
The members of the legislature are ready to go
home. Gentlemen here are your hats don't
hurry.
GERMAN MONROE. .DOCTRINE MADNESS.
When the German and British fleets drew their
blockade around Venezuelan ports, te business
nad an ugly look, as though there was a latent
thought of testing the Monroe Doctrine by at least
the bluff of a war. But when a little later tho
British great luke warm and the proposition was
made to leave the adjustment to The Hague Peace
Congress, there seemed nothing for Germany's
war lord to do but accept, and the thought of any
menace being intended was given up. But the
fury and Imprudent talk indulged in by two Ber
lin professors in discussing the question of the
Monroe Doctrine revives the belief that some
thing was intended before events culminated in n
way to cause the programme to be abandoned.
Professor Adolph Wagner declaims that "the
Monroe Doctrine is an empty pretension behind
which is neither energetic will nor active
power." Warming up, the professor declares that
"no people and no great ruler ever proclaimed
such a doctrie. Neither England nor Russia,
nor Napoleon at the height of his power ever
made a similar pretension." Then more and more
heated, he declares that "only the divisions of
European politics and lack of insight into and rec
ognition of the solidarity of the interests of mid
dle, western and southern Europe which hitherto
has been and will remain the chief seat of human
civilization that explains why Europe, why Ger
many, even, takes this empty pretension into con
sideration." There is more like the above in which
the learned Savant's zeal is equalled only by tho
modesty of his statements, evidently the favorite
song of the professor is "Hoch der Kaiser," he
gathers the world's civilization up to date into a
robe and wraps himself up in the same and then
spitefully expectorates over all the outside world.
Here Is a sample of his saliva:
"Aside from some technical and business
speeches what has the United States done of
importance for the real civilization of the
world?" We can afford to 'point to Cuba, to the
old flag and keeping still ourselves let the Ger-
man-born Americans of Cincinnati, St. Louis and H
Milwaukee answer the opinionated wise ass. BBJ
There is nothing in the Monroe Doctrine to 'H
prevent any number of thousand of the only civ- mTB
ilized men "of middle, western and southern Eu- iBBB
rope" from going to South America, building !BB
homes there and Anally taking peaceable posses- .'
sion. But they could not go there under the Ger- B
man royal standard, and once in possession they !BB
would never think of raising that standard. Eu- KJbI
rope has been fought over at brief Intervals for jH
a thousand years, the bone of contention often be- BTfl
Ing for a little patch of land with less area than H
would make a county in Texas, and the sons of '
Germany when they came away from native land "H
want no more of that work to gratify the avarice t H
and ambition of priests and kings. -
Finally the professor raises his voice too late. M
indeed, France and Austria found they were too KYB
late thirty-eight years ago, even after four huu- VB
dred thousand of the best and bravest North and BTJ
South, had just died in a Civil war. The professor Kffl
is impotent in his wrath, and possibly the knowl- M
edge of the impotency of his anathemas adds fuel H
to his anger. iBbI
And so Blount of Hawaiian fame is gone. He & BB
and Mr. Cleveland and the sooty-murderous ex'-
Queen were the chief actors in as dismal an epl- . H'H
sode as ever humiliated this country. "Blount went I
to Hawaii with all the bitterness of the Civil war XlflBB
saturating his soul; to haul down the American Vfl
flag was to him a joy he had long coveted, and the ( 1
then President of the United States, backed, with 1 H
enthusiasm, his efforts to disgrace native land H
Blunt's best frienC3 ought to pray that no dreams riB
of duties unfulfilled come to tho grave. H

SHAME. iH
Will Barnett has escaped from the pest house. 'BB
By request he prepared a statement of facts of ,Bb1
the conditions that prevail there. They cannot JH
be published. They are too full of shame and VbI
nastiness and horror. They are a disgrace to this AbI
city, this county and this state. A people are rat- IbI
ed by their public institutions. To take the pest IibI
house as a basis the nastiest and most savage Affl
tribe of North American Indians would be con- i&fJ
taminated by associating with the City Council 'Vl
of Salt Lake City, the County Commissioners of JA
Salt Lake county or the Legislators of the State M
of Utah. Such a disregard of human life and H
human suffering, such a disregard of the calls of H
' ordinary humanity, and of the decencies of life BfJ
would paralyze a Cannibal Islander. Shame! "W
Shame! Shame! BB
Gentlemen of the Commercial club are you H
also afraid to tackle the pest-house horror? B
THE SMOOT TRIUMPH. cH
On the day Apostle Smoot was sworn in os KB
Senator, the Deseret News could not restrain B
its exultation and as usual on such occasions iBB
could not adhere strictly to the truth. Probably IbB
it will be several months before the protests VB
against the seating of the Apostle will be heard H
and until then the continued discussion of the sub- B
ject would probably be futile, but a breief review H
of the News article now will not be out of place. BB
