UNLIKE AND YET ALIKE.
"No," she said, "it pains me to say
it, but both papa and imama object
to you as a prospective son-in-law."
And she said it right lustily, giving
him to understand that filial duty waB
paramount in her being and stood
before any maidenly predilections
that might exist toward him in her
buzzum.
All of which rather bowled him
over.
For she had accepted of his hospi
tality for some months, likewise had
been the recipient of diverse gifts at
his hands.
Which naturally had led him to sup
pose that he stood somewhere in her
estimation.
"I thought," he hazarded, "that your
I father and mother never agreed on
any one sublet."
And he sneered.
At which she bucked.
And drew herself up haughtily.
1 "Which is a perfectly correct pre-
sumption," she roturned, for when
maidens bo aroused they speak copy
bookwise; "my mother objects to your
' comings and my father to your late
stayings."
Repartee failed the swain, who de
j parted crestfallen.
Oh, dear! The Narrator.
I He I'm guilty of loving you.
I She I'll give ou a life sentence.
Miss Wise She had an army of ad-
mirers.
j Mis Guy Yes; but when it came to

"Geese are supposed to be sym
bolic of all that is foolish."
"Well, go on."
"But you never see an old gander
hoard up a million kernels of corn
and then go around trying to mate
with a gosling."
