STARTING A PAPER.
Starting a newspaper on paper is
one of the most economical forms of
amusement. It does no harm to talk
about it; but once the paper has pro
gressed beyond the conversational
stage it begins to get dangerous. In
the last few weeks the following
statements have been made as abso
lute fact:
The Democrats have raised $75,000
and are going to start a daily paper.
The Progressives are going to start
a weekly paper that will eventually
grow into a daily.
All of which is a reminder that it
costs money to transfer divers and
sundry thoughts to the cool and calcu
lating type of the printer said prin
ter being almost the sole beneficiary.
The Intermountain Republican was
started in Salt Lake six years ago on
a shoestring. A dally paper was
born and thrust upon the world upon
a capital of $30,000, most of which
was in "plant" of uncertain .value.
That institution absorbed nearly $350,
000 before it got anywhere near buy
ing the Herald, three years later.
The Democrats may start a paper.
They wouldn't support a tolerable
weekly that Mike Cunningham started
a few years ago, but they now have
more than hope to go on, so they may
be encouraged. But if any man in
spects the Salt Lake field and finds a
howling demand for another paper, it
will be because he doesn't know any
thing about newspapers and their
field.
