Fuaxk Leslie's Populak Monthly
i for November.?A very timely article
; is that on "the Great Fishing Ground,
and its International Questions," in
TTVaiiL- r.MliP.8 Pnnnlnr Monthly for I
I November. What all the perennial
' quarrel with our neighbors is about
will be clear to any one who reads it.
A young lady tourist on ''A Visit to
i Fort Qu Appelle," carries us to an
inland fort and mission in theXorth:
west. The never flagging interest in
| Charles Edward will stimulate many
j to read the very clever article on that
prince. "Hatfield House, the Home
of the Cecils" describes and pictures
one of the finest and grandest old and
stately homes of England rich in historic
associations. "An Ocean Swordskman,"
by Holder, is a stirring account
nf thp Rwnrdnsh <ind its caoture. As
! good as a jaunt to Jena is "Duelling at
; a German University": and the "Trip
| to ihe Pyrenees" takes the reader to
j the mountains which cut off the Peninsula
from ordinary travelers. It is
somewhat of a satire, in the heated
term just on us, to read about "Getting
Warm"; but, :is winter is fast coming,

A Strakge Phenomenon. ? The
Charlotte Observer of Sunday ?.ives
an account of a very strange phenomenon
in the shape of a rain tree. It
seems that two scrubby oak trees stand
in the corner of a yard on one of the
ci i-opIc n.nrl lhaf. ftverv dav betwee .
i the hours of one and five o'clock, genI
eraily about three, when the sky is
perfectly clear ai d the sun shining'
brightly, rain begins to tall between
the trees, first as a mist and continues
until it becomes a pretty good shower.
The rain can be seen coming down
j from above the tops of the trees. No
j one cau account ror or explain the
; mystery. Crowds or people gather to
j see it every day, and on one occasion
: an umbrella held under the tree by one
gentlemen was s -on dripping wet.
The Rev. W. R. Atkinson, president
of the Female College, on Saturday
climbed to the top of the tree to make
a personal investigation. He could
! see the lain coming from *atove the
' tree but from whence it came reI
mained a mystery. Mr. James Barry,
! in <?haror<? of the signal sta
i tiou at thai point, has been so im
pressed with what he witnessed that
he lias reported the oc.urrence to
Washington. The occurrence is witnessed
by hundreds every day, who
vouch for she genuineness of the phenomenon.
It still remains a mystery
