The Cood Roads meeting held at Pickens Friday, the 19th, was called to order by Capt. T. J. Mauldin, who, in a few wellchosen words, explained the object of the meeting and outlined the position that ,Mr. D. H. Winslow occupied in the campaign and how the government is interested and would help in a good roads campaign. County Commissioner G. W. Bowen was elected chairman of the meeting and he in a few* opportune remarks stated what was being done for a concerted action for the movement of good roads throughout the state. In a happy vein he introduced the orator of the occasion, Mr. D. H. Winslow, who, for the space of about an hour, talked on the subject of "Good Roads," telling thfi neorilft how t.hov be made, kept in repair, and their social and financial advantages to a community. We became so absorbed with the talk that -we failed to take notes, so the best part of the meeting has to go unreported. After this address, which was well received and finely delivered, a ge.ieral discussion of the ways an 1 means was indulged in, and the audience resolved itself into a Good Roads organization. The organization, which is a temporary one, was effected by the election of G. Wash Bo wen, president; R. A. Hester, vice- J president; J. L. O. Thompson, secretary and Treasurer. The president was instructed to tn.ko nn thft nf o-nrwl roads with tho proper authorities, those in this state and also at Washington, got all the inf ^nation and literature ho can on tho subject, call a meeting and report. At this time, enthusiasm is expected to be work ed up and a permanent or^amzation will be effected. /TNio crowd was small, alt ho' The Sentinel-Journal had devoted nnieh spaee to this rally, many of" the people forgetting the date, while others thought the time had passed, and some that ii was yet to come, tho county eamnaiirn meetiiur dates i ... . . in this county having much to: do with this state of affairs; hilt those who were presejit, listened with marked attenfion and left the court home enthused and pledged to the movement for good loads.
