THE INDIAN ADVOCATE
, "Watchman, what of the night?"
The watchman said: "The morning cometh."
In a similW way has God in all times appointed watchmen
over His people, to keep guard over the salvation of their
souls,to warn them of their danger,to spur them on in the way
To t,he Jews He sent the prophets, who by their voice and
writings made known to them the will and commands of
uGod, rebuked them for their sins, and foretold to them the
corning of the future Redeemer, as St. Paul assures us in the
"At sundry rimes, and in diverse manners, God spoke in
times' past to the fathers by the Prophets (Ueb., 1, .')
Under the new dispensation, and the Law of-the Gospel,
God has placed watchmen over the Church, to be leaders of
the Christian people: ..These were the twelve Apostles, whose
mission it was to preach to the nations of'the'world, ' to en
treat and exhort, and .rebuke in all authority'-" In his Epistle
to the Romans we accordingly find St. Paul 'acting the part
of a vigilant watchman, and calling upon all to leave their e
vil ways, and attend to the work of their salvation.
"Brethren, know that is now the hour for us to rise' from
sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than we believed."
Since his time, the Catholic Church has through her mini
sters performed the same office of watchman, and announced
to her children the same divine message during Advent.
From every pulpit, as from so many battlements, she rai
ses her voice, and sounds the trumpet of warning, reminding
them that now the night is passed, and the day is at hand, that
now it is time for, us to rise from our slumbers, to be astir,
and ready to resume the great work we have on hand.
The night here spoken of, is the state of sin and iniquity,
of sloth and negligence, of drunkeness and rioting, chamber
ing and impurities, contention, and envy, these the Apostle
calls. The works of "darkness , these he exhorts us to cast off.
The day-thatj'sat hand is the time of merit, the season of
God's visitation to the soul, the period in which He pours in
to it His lights and graces.
