rfarttltigton slipped Into fifth phtce
ywwrtlay bj defeating the Wilmington
Clnb, while Jersey City, its rival for
tbe pwHtloti, wat being tromreed by
Worcester. TrwgtBwi mwof the
most enjoyable of the season, well
played throughout, ami abtnimllng In
difficult plays that were loudly ap
plaitded. Daniels mmle his first .ap
pearance here, ami did excellent work.
He had good command of the Imll, only
sending three men to first, one on balls
ami the others by being hit br the ball.
Until the eighth inning, when the game
was practically won, he held the Wil
mington batters down to a minimum
number of hits, but in that inning he
eased up in his work and allowed three
two baggers to be mmle oil his delivery.
Two tuns were scored on these, but that
was as far as Ihe Delaware boys got, for
In tbe last inning Daniels scttletl down
ami retired them In stair step order.
Stein's delivery was no ptiMlc to the
local men, for they batted hard from
start to finish, making 13 hits with a
total oi iu ies. The HeMIng on both
sides was excellent, and only a very few
i-iiuib innirt-ii me worK oi eiiucr suic.
Wilmington made two pretly double
plays.
Ihe umpiring of Mahonev was the
best that Iirs ever been seen bore, In
any games, no matter what association
they were played In. Ho was all over
the field, and not a point In tho gamo
missed his attention. Ho was far bet
ter than any of the old League umpires,
and such work as he did yostcrday was
superior to any that Gaffncy ever did
In his life. It was a remarkable exhi
bition In Hint respect, and one that a
person docs not often witness.
tvhlstlcr nnd Ulrd vied with nnnb
other to sec who could make the largost
number of bits, nnd tho big first base
man enmc out ahead, making four lilts
to Bird's three. IHrd cvoned It up, how
ever, on a triple-bagger, which ho would
have stretched Into a home run had he
not fallen after passing first base.
Today tbe Ncwarks will play hore
nnd Phillips will do the honors for the
local team. It seems that Maunder
T roll bits been guilty of n little bit of
sharp practice, for yesterday he signed
Anderson, tho well known pitcher of
the Philadelphia club and who recently
won several games for the Wllmlng
tons. It Is expected that he will pitch
Tor Ihe visitors, and If so the game will
be a battle royal between pitchers.
IlKOAIIM.Nn (II.KAWl.V.
The announcement exclusively InTitB
CntTie day before yesterday that there
would Ilkoiy bo a change within a few
dajs that would be somewhat In the
nature of a surprise, referred to Gleason.
It was known at the time that Sullivan
was on tho lookout for a good man to
replace him, but ho declared last night
he did not propose to make any change
until he could better himself. Gleason
Is a valuable mnn for his batting, but he
Is off In throwing, and for that reason
men beat the ball to first when they
should be put out. Ills batting com
pensates for this however, In a great
measure, and If bo throws as well m he
did yesterday nobody will think about
releasing him. It Is unfortunate that
the story should have been teleKranhed
away, giving tbe names and circum
stances, for it excited Ilrudder" Hill
considerably, and he was at President
Hewitt's office immediately after the
game to find out whether there was any
truth in the story.
XOW VOK THIS I'EXAXT.
The Waihiogtons put up a livelier
game of ball yesterday than they have
done for some time. They hit ami
fielded well and did some excellent
team work by sacrifice hitting at oppor
lune time. It is just such work as this
that lands a club at tbe top and keeps it
there. Tbe loeal club ouaht to reach
first place by the Fourth of July, if It
can continue tbe playing it has been do
ing recently, ti is only sis game be
hind the leaders, ami tt ought to be a
comparatively easy matter to reduce
that lead, with the long series on the
borne grounds.
New Haven played Its last game oa
tbe home grounds yesterday, and now
It will have a taste of bow a club faree
away from borne. That it will drop
seems Inevitable, and, of course. Wash
ington is going to profit by that drop.
Italtimore being at home may manage
to bold its owe, but it has been playing
la big luck lately aad a change is very
liWeiy to follow. Washington may be
aide U pass Xewarks this week, as it is
only three games behind, and if 1t can
win today ami tomorrow it will
do so. The present outlook U decided ly
