THE LABOR WORLD.
What Is Labor?
S. P. LEEP.
What is Labor? Was the earth
created for a hell? Is the Almighty
a demon? Are the people on this
earth doomed to want and starva
tion for no other reason than to
satisfy the hellish greed of the few?
Much has been said and written
about labor and its conditions in
this country. Labor, which is sink
ing into ignorance and wretched
ness. To discuss the Labor ques
tion intelligently we must first
understand what labor is, its na
ture, object and scope.
Man was created to labor. In his
organization nature emphasized its
necessity, and at the same time ex
actly defines its limit. In each hu
man organism is generated a cer
tain amount of vital and muscular
force. Not only a sufficiency for
continued existence, but a surplus.
Now this surplus must be expended
in some direction or the body be
comes feverish, nervous, and the
the mind, in sympathy, becomes
fretful, uneasy, finally producing
disease. The application and ex
penditure of this surplus vital and
muscular force on the agencies of
human progress and upon the util
ities of the purposes of life is
Nature intended that this surplus
should be used in Labor but na
ture intended this as the limit to
which nature should extend the
surplus force. No more, no less.
When, however, this surplus vital
and muscular force is all expended,
and the effort is still continued at
the expense of the capital, vital
force, then it at first becomes disa
greeable, then painful, and, finally,
intolerable. This is no longer La
bor, but drudgery.
Labor is at once a blessing and a
benefit. Drudgery is alike a curse
and a crime. Labor is a pleasure
and a necessity. Drudgery is a
painful punishment and utterly
uncalled for. Labor elevates.
Drudgery degrades. Labor eno
bles. Drudgery brutalizes. Labor
strengthens and inspires. Drudg
ery weakens and dulls the mind.
To the large majority of toilers
to-day work is mere drudgery, noth
ing else. Dreary, horrible and
hopeless. The consequence is they
come to loath and detest work.
They are praying and hoping
against hope to get above and out
of it. They are seeking to avoid
and evade it.
Not nature, nor nature's laws
ever intended this degradation, but
human laws and vicious systems
have crunched Labor into want and
starvation, ignorance and filth.
Down into degenerated drudgery
and worse. Drudgery, underpaid
or unpaid, is slavery, pure and
simple, nothing else. To such, La
bor is a mere struggle for animal
existence. For the means of a mere
subsistance humanity, today, is
divided into classes: Drudges and
drones, both criminal and unnatu
ral. Idleness is a crime because
Labor is a duty. Drudgery is a
crime because it is self murder. It
is vicious and criminal to sanction
or submit to either.
True Labor is creative and God
like. It is natural and the normal
condition of every sane, healthy
man or woman. Labor is every
effort and aspiration. It shows the
respect for the creator, who toils
every day, but does not make it
drudgery. Man or woman who
does not do likewise is ignorant of
the Creator or his intention.
Whether of hand or head at im
provement and progress, Labor is
every day and a life-long educator
and developer.. Civilization is the
crystalized labor of the past.
There is in the labor problem a
philosophy involved and implied
far deeper and greater than the
matter of a few extra cents or dimes
per day. He who does not compre
hend this does not understand the
issue and can do little to aid in its
Labor is the greatest of all ques
tions because it is the greatest fac
tor in human progress.
Labor must be freed from igno
rance and greed or the human fam
ily is lost. Reason must take the
place of ignorance and supersti
tion. Justice demands it. It is
due. There is no escaping the
truth The people must have truth
and justice or sink into oblivion by
the starvation route.
What is man as we find him today
in the Labor world? Poor, de
graded and brutalized sunk in
serfdom and savagery toiling in
pain and privation weak, ignorant
and impotent hounded, perse
cuted and despised. Yea, even in
this model republic of ours, we love
to boast so much about freedom
and wave a flag called Old Glory,
which is disgraced by being the
emblem of 70,000,000 ignorant cor
poration worshippers. A nation of
people that worship a thief. A
nation of people that always pick
the most low, contemptible ex
cuses of humanity for office men
that are absolutely destitute of all
that is contained in true manhood.
A nation of people that has a law
making power that is absolutely a
disgrace to humanity! A nation
that worship courts that are a
disgrace to the worst despotism
that is known in the history of
mankind! I ask is it any wonder
that laboring people are sinking
into wretchedness and brutalized
savagery in this country?
I read a few days ago of the man
ner in which the authorities in
New York state proposed to mur
der a man for no other reason
than that he was a tramp. They,
of course, are ignorant of the
causes that produce the tramp.
These are the kind of men the peo
ple want in office in every branch
of government. I ask what is a
tramp and what made him so? Was
it nature? Nature's God? Free(?)
America! The fertile fields and
boundless plains deny. The tramp
is the victim and creation of partisan
rule and class legislation. Laws
have robbed him and now propose
to murder him for no other reason
than that he is poor. Despoiled,
disinherited, persecuted wretch
that the Creator intended for a
man, erect, free and happy.
Men and women alike are doomed
and damned so long as this system
lasts. Little children are born in
