Nothing has ever before so well fitted the purpose of its invention as the un ion label. It is a bright jewel in the diadem of honest production. It is the insigna of "white," clean, fair made goods. It is the invention to buy and the safeguard against fraudulent traf fic. It has knightly carriage in its bearing, and comes with "visor up." It carries with it neither threat nor .reproach, but more of entreaty and invitation. It belongs only to the good and its absence from the legitimate commerce in its line is cause for suspi cions of fraud and piracy on the high sea of bargain and sale. It is the north star guide of safety for the di rection of the wandering machanic and laboring man, and is beyond the reach of court corruption or illegal injunc tion. Hold fast to it, for it is good. It is current, at par, wherever honesty deals. It will bring always ohe hun dred cents on every dollar of invest ment. Demand its presence on honest made goods of any and all classes. Hold it up, and it will hold you up in return. Swear by it frame it in mem ory as the medallion of your brighter hopes and purposes. Worship it faith fully. Its killing-will leave the Dlngley rates in full'force against Por to Rico, which, however agreeable to the trusts, will not please any one else. Therefore, if any bill is to be adopted it seems that it must be the House bill, which, when passed without amend ment by the senate, need not go back to the lower house at all. Rev. Now is the time for the workers of America to come to the standard of their unions and to organ ize as thoroughly, completely and com pactly as is possible. Let each worker bear in mind the words of Longfellow: In the world's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! The pity of it! Senator BeVerldge stood so high in public estimation be fore he yielded to "administration pres sure!" There was a famous English speech which we used to spout in our school days, which pointed out the woes that were resulting, not from war, but be cause Europe was "pausing." It might now be joined with another, in which the United States Senate might be sub stituted for Europe. The High Jointers are going to as semble again, it seems. The country is glad to hear it, if it means that Can ada is going to stop playing politics and get down to business. It might just as -well be understood, however, that any attempt to trade territory in Nicaragua, which she does not hold, for territory in Alaska, which the Uni ted States does hold, will be a failure. The Loud bill has been killed in the house, and there are few to mourn over its grave. Popular opinion is decided ly with the contention that the annual postal deficit is due to railway, extor tion instead of to abuse of second-class matter privileges. If the United States should turn its entire mails o.ver to the express companies for hauling at pres ent rates, the total change would be only about $6,000,000. But the United States pays the railways $30,000,000 for exactly the same service. The Io\va,t house of representatives has passed a resolution dgnoi&c|ftg the Porto Rican tariff bill.. Uncle Sam pays $3,500,000 a year, for the rent of 500 postal cars, which could be built ofr $2,000,000 and they: would last for twenty years. Uncle Sam also paid 1 cent a pound for each 56 miles Sf distance that the railroads hauled the mails. This is about fifty times as much as is charged for carrying mer chandise. A short time ago President McKin ley Was quoted as saying: "We have 60,000 missionaries in the Philippines," referring of course to our army. Later reports show that the missionaries are getting in their work, and civilization apd Christianity are being spread with a vengeance. In the year 1897 we sent $663 worth of liquor to the Philippines. Last year we sent $106,206 worth, ac cording to the press accounts. Impossible to Enrn a Million Dollars. In a New York speech, Theodore Roosevelt said: "The American young man without money owes his work to his family but the young man with money owes his work to his country." Why? Because he who takes tribute from society, voluntary or involuntary, owes society a return of service. He who absorbs more than his rightful share of the nation's wealth is a taker of tribute. A million dollars is more than any one person's rightful share of accumulated wealth. Why? ,Because no man ever earned a million dollars, not to mention the impossibility of earning a hundred or two hundred mil lions! Let us remember that it would take the man who is earning $100 a month 833 years four months to earn: a mil lion dollars. In order to have the mil lion now, he would have to begCn earn ing it 430 years before Columbus dis covered America. He would alsk have been obliged to have some other occu pation by which to support himSedf and family during all that time, in order that he might save every dollar, every penny, of his salary to make up the million. The adventures of a farmer or labor or, tvho had lived centuries enough to earn a million dollars, would be highly interesting. The average of farm wages throughout the United States is placed by the department of agricul ture at $220 a year. Ancient kings paid less than this to the men who built their roads, their monuments and 'their palaces. At this average rate of $220 a year it would take 4.545 years to earn a million dollars. His True Moasare. The true measure of a man is not the street, nor the amen corner in church, nor the forum or lodge room, but at his own fireside. There he lays aside his mask and you may learn whether he is an imp or an angel, king or cur, hero or humbug.
