MENOMINIE, Wis., April 24.—A $50,000 Are wiped out five business houses here early this morning, de stroying Sipples' department store, Metzer's saloon, the Palace bakery, Hanschell's repair shop and Sommer field's saloon. The blaze is thought to have started from an explosion in the rear of Sip ples' store at 2 a. m. It was a wood en structure and before the depart ment arrived the building was a mass of flames. Nothing was saved. Other business blocks in the vicinity of the fire were badly scorched and had there been a wind the entire business sec tion of the city would have been de stroyed. The families of Paul Somerfleld and Max Lachner, living near Soinnierfleld's saloon, barely escaped .with their lives. Mrs. Sommerfield, nearly suffocated, by smoke, was rescued from the building by the firemen by the aid of a ladder at one of the front windows. Tele phone cables in front of the burned buildings were destroyed, cutting off communication temporarily. The loss is about half covered by insurance. PRISONERS RELEASED ON FALSE ORDER WARSAW.
