Where oh where, is the good old pocket, the unflndable pocket the mysterious, tan talizing, disappearing, outrageous, ut terly futile and ridiculous pocket that your dear mother wore when she twisted your hair into pigtails until your eyes frantically sought to escape from your head? A bag is so absurd. It opens so easily and gives practically no excuse to keep the car conductor waiting more than five minutes or the pom padoured shopgirl sighing wearily for fifteen. Where is the vanished boy of standing at the head of a weary, per spiring line of seatseekers at the the ater or ball game and twirling flounces, plunging into weird furbe lows and pretending to be desperately flustrated while all the time you are watching the man behind you and wondering eagerly just how long his politeness will stand the strain. Of course it is still possible to lose your handbag or find incredible difficulties in opening the catch, but then that really Is no compensation for the lost Joys of the incomparable pocket. Of course there would be no use in restoring the pocket with a sheath gown, so we must go back to the frills and flounces. Then why not let us bring back the dear old crino line. Think what an exquisite pleas ure it would be to get into a pay-en ter street car with a crinoline. How we could crush the miserable men with scornful glances if they dared to share a seat with any of the hate ful creatures. Away with such futile fripperies as votes, rates and hobbles—let us arise and demand own pockets, our flounces and our own crinolines. REFORMING THE BUTCHER. A Granite City (111.) woman has hit upon a novel scheme for coercing her grocer and butcher to send her choice food. The woman, who keeps a boarding house, sent for the merchant one day when his offerings had been espe cially objectionable, and insisted upon his staying to dinner. The steak was stringy and impene trable, the omelet was made from rancid eggs. He couldn't eat the meal and the other boarders made uncompliment ary remarks about the food. After that it is recorded that ten der steaks and fresh eggs always found their way to that house. These schemes seem to suggest pos sibilities. How would it be to ask the dressmakers to wear the frocks that they spoil, and the cooks to eat the scorched soup and raw bread they turn out? In the professional field the same, experiment might be tried. If the doctors had to take their own bitter medicines and the preachers were forced to listen to their dullest sermons, some improve ment in these lines might be noted.
