Wenzel, commissioner of pub- n-n,.i/.c lie works, and Oscar Claussen, city engineer. St. Paul, were here last Fri day to study operation of the wheel age tax law preparatory to introduc tion of a similar measure in the St. Paul city council. The Duluth law, said Commissioner Wenzel, yields that city approximately $75,000. and he believes a similar or dinance in St. Paul, wbuld provide nearly $400,000, which would be used for paving and pavement repairing. The plan, as outlined by Mr. Wen zel when here, is to place a tax of 50 cents per horsepower on pleasure cars and a tonnage tax on auto trucks. The rate of the latter has not been decid ed. This money would be used for paving arterial streets on which resi dents could not afford to pay for. the work. The plan meets with the ap proval of all councilmen and St. Paul labor organizations, which object to the Babcock plan of taxing city auto ists for country roads.
