Jtr. W. It. Clttlctlc, who Is still "tarring

PrlvntoScerrtnry,"has written n now play,
which Is shortly In ho prixluiolln Vnliliu
ton. It deals ultliei cuts grim Ing out of tin
Into civil war In this country, ami It to ba
called "Through tho Linos " .Mr. (llllotto's
new pleco Is written from tlio Smtthorn
standpoint, and It will hivo Its llrt few
months ol llfo on n route extending o'ith
wnnl from WnhIngton. INuw Vorlc 'Ihnoi
Hero Is further evidence; (tint Wash
Ington Is regnnlcil by American nl.y
wrlghts ns the Vest place In t lie country
Xroiu which to launch their uiUrlol
ilrntuntlc ventures upon the sot of fate
public opinion. They consider the
judgment of Washington theatre pa
trons n better test ns to tho merits of ti
new piny than tho verdict of any
other theatrical nudlcnco throughout
the lnnd.
In selecting tho Nntlonnl Capital ns
tho plnco whero first to try tho gauge
of public sentiment, tho dramatic au
thor exhibits a sagacious appreciation
of tho enlightenment and critical cul
ture of our citizens, for It Is conceded
Hint the residents of this truly cosmo
politan city constitute) a. community of
rare and diversified attainments. In
polut of general intelligence utid edu
cation It Is nowhere surpassed. Tho
renson why It Is so consists In tho fact
Hint liy far tho larger portion of the
population of tho city Is composed of
the best elements of tho best classes
drawn hither from all sections of tho
Union, while our foreign sojourners
conio for tho grcntcr part from the
most polished and distinguished circles
of tho Old World. Hcnco the seal of
npprovnl or disapproval with which nn
average Washington nudlcnco sttmps
tho production of a new play can bo re
lied upon ns nn almost Invariable in
dex of tho intelligent opinion of tho
country.
It may bo, however, thnt tho Judg
ment of n Wnshiugton nudlcnco docs
not always coincide with tho Judgment
of its newspaper crltics.though editorial
criticism In Washington, taken ns it
runs, is probably ns discerning ami at
tho same tlmo unprejudiced as in other
cities. It often happens that plays
which even tho great journals of Nuw
York unsparingly condemn, prove to
ho tho most successful, so far as liberal
patronago nnd wldo popularity are In.
dicatlvo of success. But it must bo re
membered that nowadays, theatre
goers are not so much influenced ns
they formerly were by what Is called
newspaper criticism, which is qulto as
npt to be tho outcropping of Individual
bias as nwork of discriminating justicu.
The patrons of tho theatro, moro than
ever before, go and Judge for them
selves without waiting to bo told by tho
dramatic editor whether it is. worth
their while to do so or not.
This was Illustrated qulto recently
nnd strikingly by ono of our esteemed
morning contemporaries, which, for
reasons satisfnetory to Itself, severely
denounced the character of tho per
formances nt .two of our up-town
thentrcs nnd focussed tho flattery of Its
untrnmmclcd critic upon and In behalf
of the attraction nt nnother theatre. At
tho end of tho week tho latter placo of
amusement closed its doors nud they
hnvo not been opened since, whilo tho
two theatres whoso managers as well
ns players wcio so badly excoriated, con
tinue their business as usual. Wo do not
intend to convey tho iden that tho thea
tre In question closed Its doors In, couso
quenco of tho merited prnlso of an un
trammeled critic ; It was for want of
patronage, which no newspaper criti
clem, untrammelcd or otherwise, can
control. All of which goes to sustain
tho point with which wo started out,
that tho people of Washington who nt
tend tho theatres, are In tho hnblt of
exercising an Independent judgment ns
to tho merits or demerits of a play re
gardless In a great degrco, of tho pros
nnd cons of tho newspapers. As to
their likes and dislikes In this respect
they have a stnndnrd of their own, ns in
matters of dress nnd diet nnd dally llfo,
without consulting tho oracles of tho
press, and this is why tho verdict of
intelligent Wnshlngton nudiencos Is es
teemed of such weight nnd importanco
liy tho authors of now plnys. They know
thnt such a verdict Is candid and un
biassed, and therefore just.
THE 1'ltIMItOSH DAMES.
Tho criticism of Lady Randolph
Churchill for taking such n prominent,
not to eay promiscuous, part In n re
cent contest of her husband, Lord
Randolph Churchill, for n return to
Parliament, hns by no means daunted
thnt venturesome lady. Much interest
Is felt In the result of tho olectlon In
Birmingham, whero Lord Randolph Is
pitted ngniust that "enerablo Radical,
John Bright, nud Lnuy Churchill has
lnauguinted n lively campaign for her
husband. Sho nnd tho Duchess of

candidate. Each lady is responsible
for a certain dlstilct in IJlimlngham.
Sho goes about her business llko an
ordinary "ward hcolor," nnd makes
regular returns of what sho has accom
plished to a central oxecutivo com
mittee. Lady Churchill nnd tho
Duchess of Marlborough havo mado
numerous "progresses" through tho
fcticctsof Birmingham, nnd hnvo been
Invariably greeted with entliuslnstlo

Despite all fho (-(Turn of the "Trim

enn prevent It. It Is snld that tho ton
nage nnmtnlly pissing through the Kill
Von Kull amounts lo nbout 211,000,003
nnd thnt previous attempts to bridge It
have been resisted by tho New .lersny
Legislature on tho ground that to do bo
would seriously Interfere with the traf

tion of n bridge neross tho Kill Von

Legislature, nnd fho members of Con
grrs nnd Senators fiom Now Jersey
have been requested to oppose tho
granting by Congress of tho right to
build the proposed bridge. Tho llilti

A structure cm certainly bo built, llko
that over the Hudson at Albany, which
would not in the lenst Impede tho navi

U. & O. bo permitted to build it with
out controversy nnd delay?
Tun Night School movement Is ono
that deserves tho encouragement of nil
good clticns. It hns been t'iken In
hand by a number of earnest nnd In
llucnflnl ladles, whoso efforts lu tho
cause should bo promptly nnd liberally
responded to. Tltero being no Con
gressional nppropiialiou nvnllablo for
tho purpose, theschools will have to bo
supported for tho present by private
contributions, and tho sooner tho no
ccssary fund is raised tho sooner will
these much-needed educational agencies
bo permanently established for tho
winter.
Mil. CUTIIllKIlT R. Jones of Lousl
nun, It will bo remembered, recently
wrote n later to Representative .1
l'iojil King, iu which tho latter was
criticised In no feeble terms as n liar, a
poltroon and a coward. General King
replies by saying that Mr. Jones is nu
nfcsnssln, and as such lied tho country,
and that he will have nothing to do
with him or pay any attention to his
letter. Wo see no necessity under tho
circumstances of printing a diagram of
tho teat of war.
Tun Viiioinia Board of Stato Can
nssersat Richmond yesterday began
to count tho lecent vote lor nttorney

Assembly. Tho vote for Governor and
Lieutenant-Governor will bo counted
by tho Legislature In joint session,
which meets December 2 next. Very
little interest is taken lu tho oflleial
count, It having been nlteady dis
counted by well-nscertnitied returns.
AccoitniNo to our New Jersey ad
vices the candidacy of Frederick A.
1'otts for the United States Senate gives
Mr. Sewell much moto uneasiness than
tho candidacy of Chancellor Runyou

it is said, will havo tho New Jersey
