This section of the State can be said to have representatives who are prac- I Stical, intelligent and devoted to the beat interest of their constituents. s We cannot doubt that these gentle m- en recognize the vital importance e of certain measures of legislation ap i plicable to our local and district af a faire that have already been referred e to in these columns. The change of1 neour judicial and senatorial districts, I !. making one district of Rapides Par ,,lish, is not only a matter of very 4 great interest, involving many ad vantages to the public, but the re . quisite legislation is simple and in expensive. A bill remodeling this district could not possibly militate against the welfare of any class, but Swould on the contrary redound to a the public convenience and the gen l eral good. The citizens of Avoy elles and Grant Parishes would urge rt no obstacle to this change. Rapides d is destined to be the most populous, k wealthy and attractive country. Par I1 ish in the State. If the law mating the alterations suggested is not passed at this session, it will be im epossible to affect the change until e six years hence. SWe hope our legislature will also e adopt some legislation by which, at the next general election, our pro t- sent constitution can be amended. ec It is, beyond doubt, an actual dis i. grace to tue intell!gence and practi. I cal good sense of the people. It d needs boiling down badly and we eI cannot see for the life of as why the legislature could not make vast im e provements upon it by a simple and t: economical process. Amendments remodeliug the judicitary and other ]i mportant changes, can be grafted upon it at the general election of ' 1884. In the name of all the stupid ity and corruption and bombast that characterized the last Constitutional [ Convention, we trust that another • may not be called to insult this gen ;h eration. se Our organic law should be wiseL e brief and economical. The Consti o tutlon of our fathers-barring the blots placed upon it in the shape of a the so-called amendments of late Id years-is the most wonderful mod ce el of wisdom and simplicity ever at conceived by the human mind. Our , State Constitution should be equally as brief, whereas, it is vastly more statutory than fundamental, * * --- sic ALEXANDsRI, LA., ml May 1, 1882. re The stockholders of the Rapides tb Cemetery Association met in the ge Town Hall in accordance with notice mi and charter, and proceeded to elect co the following officers for the ensuing a .year: p1 Mrs. M. A The Treasurer's report showed a balance on hand of $155.50. The Board of Directors then ad journed until the first Monday of August, 1882. M. L. GROGAN, President. W. W. W rITTINGTOW, Ja., Secretary. SENTENCED.-On Saturday evening F" last about 4 o'clock, Mr. Charles B. a Stewart was sentenced by Judge Barbin to five years imprisonment ec in the State Penitentiary at Baton Ut Rouge, found guilty by jury last ac week, for the killing of one Peter gi Provencal in this . Town some time E in January last. A large crowd was ol present in the court room at the time, among whom were many warm and intimate friends of the prisoner, Et who feel sorely distressed at his great ti misfortune. As is usual, before sen- $: tencing the prisoner, the Judge in- g quired whether or not he had aught C to say why sentence should not be pronounced upon him. . Mr. Stewart Cl replied that he had a few words It written down that he would like the g Clerk to read, which was as follows: I wish your Honor to ask the Clerk to read my reasons, for I cannot speak ri them. I have not had a fair trial. My witnesses are absent. John B. Clould, w the only witness that saw the deceased trying to shoot me was not here. I reliod on my attorney's statement that his testimony would be received in my defense, as the same was reduced to - writing before your Honor. The tea timony was rejected, and without it there could be no fair trial. I would have had Cloud here if possible, if I had not been so positively assured by my attorneys that his testimony woiuld have come before the Jury. Had I had a fair trial, and Cloud's testimony admitted, your Honor, I religiously believe, would not -have been called upon to have pronounced sentenco on me. But suech is my fate, and I trust in God that I may be relieved, for I am not guilty. Messrs. Blackman and White, attor neys for the accused, will appeal to the Supreme Court, asking that a new trial be granted the prisoner. EPISCOPAL MrETHODIST.-Walrrant ed not to contato a single particle of mercury or any injurious or mineral substance, but to ensist entirely of Smedicinal roots and herbs, which is the reason Simmons Liver Regulator -is so sfflectual yet se harmless. "This medicine is acknowledged to - have no equal as a liver medicine, - containing those Southern roots and * herbs which an all-wise Providence has placed in countries where liver diseases prevail.-Baltimore Episco I pal Methodist." Does the young man who per sists in being one ever reflect how much leess it would cost to be a decent, respectable man Does he imagine that loafing is more eeonbmleal than gentilityt Anybody can be a gentle man, if he chooses to be, without much coat, but it is mighty expensive being a loafers It costs time in the first place, for nobody can be a first-clase loafer unless he devotes his entire ime to it. The occupation well followed hardly affords time for eating, sleep ing, dr-, we had almost said drink ing, but on reflection we will except that, for the loafer invariablyfilands time to take a drink whenever he is invited. To be a loafer it costs mon ey, health, figot, comfort and friends. Once fully embarked on the sea of loafing, you bid farewell to every friendly sail that. floats undet ani hon est and legitimate flag. Your consorts will only be the bueanlers of society. It costs all your dignity and self-res pect whilt living, apd finally, all re gret or consideration when dead.
