Jonas Rosenthal has our thanks for a sample lot of peaches, gathered from his garden and sent to this office on Thursday. -WE failed to learn the action of the Parish Advisory Committee of the World's Exposition, at their meeting held yesterday afternoon. -MR. and Mrs. B. M. Rougeau arrived here yesterday by train from their country home. They will remain until Sunday evening. -WE will give a year's sub scription of the Tri-Weekly DEkM OCRAT to the party bringing us the largest watermelon by the first of July. Hurry up! --IT makes very little difference to Anut Eliza Murray who's nomi nated at Chicago, she's going to keel) her tables supplied with the best the market affords. Watts, Clerk of the Dis trict Court, has received the com missions of the different Magis trates and Notaries throughout the Parish, elected at the recent elec tion, held in May. --JUST at the present writing vegetables of all kinds are very plentiful. Among the many kinds offered to the trade are tomatoes, noeumhers, squashes, green peas, corn, cabbages, etc. -Mn. Henry Heyman returned home on Thursday from Texas. During his sojourn away he visited Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and Galveston. He is "right side up with care." Do you understand ? -As will be seen by the river report published elsewhbre,- "Old Red" has declined about t~ib and one-half inches since last report. To this may be added a fall during the day yesterday of abott three inches. This is, indeed, glorious n-ews. . ' . --AT the suggestion of a'. num ber of our towns-people, Mr. A41-. bert, Jr., purposes to-day photo graphing the old Seminary grounds and bulldings thereon. The same nicely encased in a beautiful frame would make a pretty mantel or par lor ornament. -AT their short session here this week, the Police Jury transacted very little business, and adjourned until the first Monday in July. By that time the Governor will have made appointments in this Parish, and the new Police Jurors ready to enter upon the discharge of their duties. RIVER NEWS.--For the 24 hours ending at 8 o'clock yesterday mor ning, the Government Observer here reports a fall in the river of 2 inches; at that hour the Gauge reading was 35.05, making it 28 feet, 9 inches above low water of 1881, and 1 foot, 4j inches below high water of 1866. -WE have received a beautifully printed invitation from the Colum bia Athenmurn, requesting that we be present at the commencement exercises, which begin on the 8th of July and continue till the 11th, and consist in part of a grand con cert and soiree dansante. The sa lutatory is to delivered by Miss Anna W. Looney and the vale dictory by Miss Sallie R. Haden. -A. SCROOL ExuHBITION.-The tea chers of the girls' departmeit of the Public School will close the ses sion as usual with an Exhibition, consisting of tableaux, recitations, dialogues, charades and music, in which the scholars will be assisted by the best amateur talent of the Town. ' The great success attend ing these entertainments ain the past, encourages the lady mana gers to hope for lib eral patronage to their present effort. -IT now turns out that Winm. Brown, who was- reported as hav ing' drowned 'while crossing the Bayou Darro, near Seton. John son's store, one day last week, and who was buried by the Silver Trowel Lodge (colored) of our Town, did not come to his death in that way, .but was murdered and his body thrown into the bayou. Three colored men, whose names we were unable to obtain, charged with the murder, have been jailed at Colfax. -MILLER, Brady & Co., if we are to judge from the noise and bus tile to be daily seen and heard round their headltiarters, is the only firm in Alexandria that are pushing things, despite the high water and hard times.
