And now that the campaign is
over it may be in order to ask what
has become of Ben Butler., His
stentorian voice has not been heard
amid the booming of cannon in hon
or of Clevelands election. His rep
resoetation in the electoral College
is not anywhere visible. His fu
sions and proposed confusions have
not left' a single 'ripple upon the
the surface. His legions of horny
handed followers did ,not appear at
the polls on elecotion day. In fact
his.campaign has proven the most
lamentable failure that has ver fol
lowed:. sunoh highi pretensions;. ,:
his own State he was literally bu-i
ried. His total vote in Massaohu
setts was less than 25,000, while
St. John, polled: over 10,000. ~f
there was one thing'of ;. hioh he
boasted'it was' his bhold upon the
people of. Massachusetts. His. sup'
porters had the hardihood: to ask
for him the nominiation of the Na
tional Democratic Cibnvention-po
ground that he could carry at leasiY
half the electoral vote of New iing
land. The Massachiisetts -vote is'
about as follows: Blaine, 141,692;
Cleveland, 117,692; Butler, 23,823;
Si. John,10,038. The old flopper
has at.1ast beena left ligh and idry,
outside of both: parties, a:nd witlhut
even a respectable following of
cranks. The Greenbackers and the
Labor party are alike didguited with
him, and will not again tcoinuiithe
