A ROYAL LAUNDRY.
Ihow Qtuern Virtoria Superittends the
Washing and I ning.
Queen Vic:toria's aundry is a
square, ivy covered building, with a
wing projecting from one side. It
has no pretent ions to architectural
besauty or appiatRnce, but its inte
rior has been d(:sin1ed for the special
lpurpose for w'hich it is fitted. In
this the lcir.:onal linen of the queeii
is dealt with, and no stranger, under
any circu!nr tant.s, is permitted in.
;ile its walb;. The soiled linen ar
ri te: frotm t;, royal palaces in great
white square ba::kets and is taken in
hand at e~oe by the sorters and
compared with the lists that accom
ýany it. The personal linen of mem
burs of the royal farnily is sent and
returned in wooden boxes with brass
plates, on which are ongraved the
names of the owners and numbers.
'fheso are taken to a sorting roomit
kept specially for them.
Two washing rooms used for the
household and table linen lead from
the goneral sorting room. From the
rinsing tub everything goes imme
diately into the wringing machine,
which, revolving at the rate of 700
revolutions a minute, delivers the
articles very nearly dry. Across the
passag i:; the mangle and press
room, where daily great piles of ta
blecloths, towels, sheets, etc., are
dealt with. Towels form by far the
largest number of items dealt with,
and when Victoria is at Windsor
several hundreds of dozens a week
go through this establishment, and
all the household linen dealt with is
from the queen's establishment
alone, for, though all the porsonal
linen of the members of the royal
family is cleansed hero so as to se
cure the greatest amount of safety
from any infection, the household
lnen of the different branches is
sent prinoipally to private firms.
Drying and ironing rooms are on
the first floor. That devoted to the
former purpose is elaborately fitted
whIh slides over the furnace, but is
principally intended for use in wet
or wintory weather, as there is a
i.plcndid drying ground attached,
and adjoining this is a large corru
gated iron shed, with open ends and
sides formed of revolving shutters,
for use on showery days and damp
niights. In the ironing department
a rule is in force that seems strange,
inc.olving, as it does, much extra
wo'rk and expense-everything hero
is thoroughly dried before it is,;
ironed. Of course the patent iron
ing machine saves a good deal of
tio extra labor, but the scores of
flat irons speak eloquently for them
sclves of their share of the work.
The royal table linen is of the fin.
e~t substance and is specially manu
factured. The designs woven in aro
very handsome and elaborate, the
queen's monogram predominating,
with roses, shamrocks and thistle;
among armorial bearings. It is also
made in sets, each tablecloth having
a um'ber of serviettes to match it
in design, etc.
The queen herself periodically su
perintends the throwing out of worn
articles at her lPalaces. As she is
seated in the linen room at Bucking
ham palace each thing is held up
before her and condemned or passed,
as the case may be. If the former,
its destination is at once fixed--ei
ther a hospital or somen other charita
blo institution-and it is certain ,,
reach that destination as soon after
it is cleared from the books of the
palace as lxpssible.--House Furnish
ing Review.

The woman emancipationist had
tackled the serene old lbachelor and
was reading the riot act to him in a

He squirmed occasionally, but he re
