THE DAILY ••RECORD-UNION. FRIDAY... -. iAICI'ST 13. isw. A BICYCLISTS MISADVENTURE. Lured on by the blandishments of the circular sent him from the Boston house, in which the beauties and advantages of the "noiseless steed" were extolled in lofty terms, he invested §100 in a bicycle, and proudly wheeled the I unmanageable thing into a back lot and afterward into an unused hall "to get his bearings." It bore down on him pretty hard for a while, but after receiving innumerable " headers, in which the small wheel invariably landed on top, he finally assayed to appear in pub lic, and wheeled through the streets as gracefully as a kangaroo, to the imminent danger of pedestrians and baby-carriages. He moved so noiselessly that spectators re marked he had rubbers on, and nervous females seemed possessed to step both ways at once in endeavoring to avoid collisions. It was fun, and he felt as happy as a big sunflower until an unforeseen calamity drove the smile of contentment . from his countenance never to return again. In the distance (he was not near-sighted), he espied a fashionably attired young lady approaching who proved to be a very par ticular friend. Increasing his knee action he rapidly lessened the distance between them, until he was ready to glide by with out touching the hem of her garment, when he attempted to doff his chapeau after the most approved Broadway style. Dnlucky bicycler ! In his anxiety to do the proper caper he forgot he would be ob liged to let go the handles with one hand, and the consequences were most lamenta ble. The unreliable steed veered to one side and collided violently with a shade tree. The hapless mortal performed the double-somersault act and was actually thrown so high and so hard that his heel was driven into the crotch of the tree, be tween a limb and the trunk, where he hung suspended in midair while the machine looked like a figure 8, in the gutter. He did not hang long in suspense, however, for as luck would have it his boots were slightly large for him, and the tree serving as a boot-jack his own avoirdupois soon pulled the boot off, and he dropped to the ground.— [Auburn Advertiser. — • ♦ Marysvill: has two lady librarians— Miss Jones of the City Library, and Mrs. Wat eon of the Odd Fellows' Library. The Pleasures of Hope. ■ When the body is bowed with pain, an intense longing for relief brings hope. This may brighten the suffering, but it does not cure. At a time like this how welcome is such a friend as Warner's Safe Kidney and Liver Cure, brirging hope, health and happi ness, and the joys of a renewed life. 11. C.
