LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. FKCPO3ED POLiriCAL CONSOLIDATION. The Secoqd Ward Republican Club, pre aided over by A. J. Senatz, met at Front and X streets last evcniug. There was consider able enthusiasm manifest. Addresses were wade by several members of the club. The club adjourned with three cheers for Garfield and Arthur and agreed to meet again on the evening of the 29th instant. The Republican Legion held a large and interesting meeting at Howe's li lU last evening-, 0. W. Post pre siding. Tbo chief que.-tion of the evening was that of the best and most effective organiza tion for campaign purposes in this city. Ad dresses were made by Messrs/White, Post, I'evliD, Kyan, Shephard, Anderson, Van Fleet and others. The general tenor cf the ducu9=i)n develop°d a strong desire to have all the Uepnb'.ioan ward clubs unite in one genera! central organization, with a common place of meeting to be established as hezd •juarterN ; that such central body should be the Legion, that as many ward companies or club 3 as possible be recruited, but that the whole expense of ward j clubs be saved by one general place of meet- : ins;. It was stated by6everal of the speakers that holding no many meetings, having so maDT club expenses ami halls, and operating so many distinct organization*, weakened the efforts of city Republicans and was ineffec- j tive for work that would tell in the campaign. ■ After tha u.atter was thoroughly discussed, a motion prevailed that the President and Secretary brae i call for a meeting of the Legion for Friday night of this week at ; Howe's il.il!, Masonic building. That the j name officers call on Messm. Shephard, I Oenson, Sunatz, Jones and Taylor, of the other organisations, and request them to ijsue nails for their clubs to meet at the same time and place f»r a general council, with a view ! to having one general central organization, ! Aii'l looking to the abandonment of ward meetings, except when the general organiza tion .-liali hold meetings in the different wards i of the city, and with a view to having but ' one regular meeting per week, and but one ' set of expenses to 'jay ; but that this move- ! ment doe* Dot look to the abandonment of the Sailor Boy organization, nor the organ- ; izationi in wards or parts i f wards, of as | many companies as can be gathered to form i the central < realization, for purposes of pa rade, cto. An invitation was extended to tte Army and Xavy League to atteud the general meeting of Fiiday iiijjht. The Legion then adjourned. Personal.— E. 15. Ryan, C. J. Robinson, L. M. Cfemeat and C. A. Horse 3 that Hava Arrived tor tie Stat< Fair. Agricultural Park i 3 now ready for i the opening of the State Fair next Monday. Every part cf the grounds on close inspection chows the careful work of the clean and re ; pairer. All the brick and woodwork of the stalls, fences and sheds have been whitened, and where before dilapidated thoroughly re -1 paired. The new reporters' stand has been completed and i 3 ready for occupancy. > It is intended for and will be reserved to represen tatives of tbe daily papers of California exclu sively, and is barely large enough for that purpose. The new blackboard Las been put in place, not between standards, as original ly intended, but across the face of the timers' stand, an arrangement that is quite as good. • . It " should, the great length of the spectators' stands being considered, hi - much larger, but this could not well be ai:d have it located where it now is. The original intention was to have the letters or.c foot long, bat if they are printed out caiefuliy, they can be seen at a sreat distance, even at the lesser tize. It would have been better l:ad the nine strips of molding been omitted, and paiated white lines used instead, t<> Beparate the names of horses, as the perscn who letters oui the names could thru have written close down to the line, which is now impossible — in fact, this utilization of space would have been invaluable. Singular T.'.m;:. — A singular exhibition of ecnliar taste has just been made at A,ri cultural Park. The outer walls and the ! buildings l.aye been whitewashed, but the artists with the " broa brush" have extended their labors to the trees eloni; Twentieth street, next to the Park, and every one i f ti. • handsome *hade tiees there is now an r.lfer..»e to good taste. Bach tree trunk has been col ored to a hight of about ci^ht. feet in three broad hauds, rad, white and blue, the whib b.ind forming the ground work for a fearfully regular nprinkling of blue stare. Ir 1 thii was an attempt ti symbolise the "Stirs and Stri| e»," it ai-i,-nal failure, a< the ornamei. tntion (Heaven lave the mark !) i.i far more suggestive of the ''stars and bars." The first impression mado i-i that the • ntire tonsorial fraternity has taken qouters in the Park, and that these melancholy trees are the canal signs of barber Miups, us certainly as that itisa barbarous destcration of natural growth. Th • gr<en foliage of tha tnei is thrown into sickly contrast, an the Iry bou£>h-i i'.ro>p with hhan:B at the immodtst pantalets in which thtir miserable limbs are clothed. For the sake of good taste and to prtvent a sudden and inconvenient rush to the ii i aue as>lum?, won't the erintei lent of the Paik, who ii a n:an ( f good taate, require the aitUts in whitewash to return to the iree and cover their e ifort at art with a umple aod chari< table robe of white ': As now decorated (?) the tree 3 wi.l be a standing >ke for the thousands who will visit the place next week, and will 1)3 tLe theme for more incUive and ju.-t criticism than has ever been showered I opon any Agricultural Society in the world. ; The only wonder it that the Directors ever | permitted this offense to good taste to be : perpetrated.
