Disgraceful Scene in a Merced Court
room. .
Merced, October 20th.— A moat flagitious
act of ruffianism took place in the Court-room
of the Superior Court in this place this after
noon, while the Court was in session, and
while District Attorney Farrar was making
his closing argument in the second trial of
the case of the People vs. E. J. Hamilton on
an indictment f. r appropriating to his own
use moneys belonging to Merced county. .In
his argument the District Attorney made re
marks of a very uncomplimentary character
against R. H. Ward, one of the attorneys for
the defendant, when Ward threw at and
struck the District Attorney with a large ink
stand. Farrar in turn threw a book at Ward.
Each continued throwing such missiles at the
other as were at hand, until bystanders inter
fered and stopped the fray. Ex-Chief Justice
Wallace was in the Court-house at the time,
besides a large number of citizens, drawn
there to witness the trial. After the fray
was over each of the combatants essayed to
apologize to the Court, but Judge Marks,
who was presiding, informed them that the
offense was of too serious a character to be
condoned or excused, and that Bevere punish
ment would be visited upon them. . District
Attorney Farrar was slightly injured by the
inkstand, and one of the jurymen in the box
was severely cut upon the foot by the same
missile. The case on trial was given to the
jury shortly after the disgraceful Court scene
occurred.

around his neck, and slipped off, dying of
strangulation. His knees almost touched the
floor. Cannon was a plasterer by trade, and
lately has been very dissipated. He was
about sixty years of age. The body was
taken charge of by the Coroner, who will
hold an inquest to-morrow.
