Chicago, 111., March 21. A large business-was transacted and a higher range o prices established for May wheat while the more deferred futures did not follow the advance and ruled rather weaker. The close was about Cv higher for May than yesterday. The June and July deliveries did not follow the advance. Shorts cover ed freely for May and operators were re luctant about selling short for that deliv ery, evidently fearing manipulation liable on account of the limited supply of wheat at hand. The action of the market would indicate that short sellers had changed their interests to July delivery. There was a fair speculative business transacted in corn and the situation was relatively firm early, influenced largely by the strength of wheat, but a lower tone was developed, due largely to large esti mated receipts. Final quotations were the wiine as on vesterthiv rPliii nnf mnvL'nt filtlinnrrli nn7?r nnfivfl failt'(1 to exhibit tiie life atul large volume of trading noted yesterday and closed steady at about the same prices as on yes terday. Not much was doing in pork and the feeling was comparatively steady. Prices exhibited only slight changes and the market closed at inside figures. Trading in lard was moderate with only slight changes tanote in prices. There were a few contracts early and prices advanced 2c. Later the market ruled quiet and prices settled back again to medium figures and closed quiet. In short rib sides there was a moderate business and the market ruled steady at tibout former figures. o s r o o en, g ARTICLES. 5 S . r Wheat March SO POJg 5WK S0H May my- bi S0 1 June .luly 7S 7SJf VTJg 7SH Corn March April 29 29W 2v 20i May R) ?0S 2UJ? SHE WAS AN HONOR TO HER SEX. Columbia College Perpetuates tho Memory of Ucr First Female Graduate. Early iu March thcrowas placed in the east end of the Columbia College library at Kew York a memorial window in honor of a wo man tho lato Miss Mary Parsons Hankey, daughter of James Hankey, of Totts Hill, Staten Island. This memorial is to perpetu ate the memory of tho fact that Miss Haukey was the first ferrale student who ever received tho degree of Bachelor of Arts from Colum bia. She graduated with the highest honors in 1S37, and immediately entered on the ca reer of a teacher at tho New York ladies' school with which Miss Rose Elizabeth Cleve land was once identified. One day she met with an accident, but insisted on returning to work prematurely. The result was typhoid fever, and death came six months after her leaving college. Miss Hankey graduated whon 23 years of age, and nt that time Presi dent Barnard said of her: "I have never THE nAXKEY MEMOP.IAL WIXDOW. known a better example of a finely propor tioned and well rounded education for a wo man, and that woman a lady, than Mnry pos sesses."' Tho design for the window is by Professor Blaim, of Munich. Tho subject is treated In an allegorical way, and represents tho stu dent kneeling, with wreaths of former tri umphs at her feot, and reaching for tho fur ther honors tendered by knowledge or sci enco. At tho same time the student's fuce ia turned toward an angel who beckons her to an immortal crowii. Appropriate inscrip tions appear at tho feat of the figures tho class motto, tho family coat of arms, Mis3 Hankey's favorite motto, and tho record in Latin of the voung lady's scholastic stand- 1 ing at Columbia and the dat of her death, which was Jan. 29. 1S5S. . Pope, teller of tho Louisville City National bank, with- 500,000 of the institu tion's funds will probably furnish excuse for the humorists again to turn their attention to bank ofllcials as subjects for witty para graphs The violation of such a trust as that reposed in a teller is, however, more a theme for terious consideration than for a joke, Tho thief does not really rob tho bank, he rob3 the honest toilers and professional and business men who aro the depositors, and who depend upon their savings to 6ecnro their future from want. Teller Pope is a native of Jvoutucky, and was born thirty-eight years ago ou a farm near Louisville.
