Receipts of live stock at the Union Stock
Yards for 24 hours-236 cattle 915
hogs and for the week just closed 1054
cattle and 4643 hogs, a gain over the
previous week of 203 cattle and 70
hogs. The cattle market was more ac
tive today and prices ruled steady to
strong on all grades. There were some
choice cattle among the offerings, and
some were unsold at the close. The
hog market opened strong to 2 1-2
cents higher than ruling prices yester
day. Bulk of the hogs sold at $4.00
which is 12 1-2 cents higher than clos
ing price one week ago.

CATTLE.
Receipts 236. shipments none. The market was
active today, as buyers took hold In better shape,
and stuff sold at good prices. There was a cowl
showing of fat cattle among the offerings. Packer.,
local butchers and shippers were all strong buyers
today. There were s-ome good cattle unsold at the
close. Chicago and Kansas City reported the mar
ket steady. This market closed steady to btrong.

aKd shipper, completed tho purchase of
fifty head of stockers at the yards this
afternoon. He will drive them to his farm

Mr. Z. M. Johnson, ex-cattle buyer for
the Dold Packing company, is now cattle
salesman for Ditmars, Voris & Co.
Harvey Grace, a prominent stockman
from Cheney, was looking over the market
today. He said it is certainly wonderful
to see how fast this market is improving
and it will surprise everybody within the
tiiL'xt year. Says there are a great many
ymuig hogs being fed in southwestern
itansas and by the first of September next
there will be 2,500 hogs a day on this mar
ket, and people will wonder where they
all come from.
Mr. Ward Tucker, who represents the
firm of Beef & Nuckle, of Leadville. Col.,
and R. II. Tucker & Co., of Aspen, Col.,
has been on the market during the week
buying butcher cattle for those markets.
Ho has purchased 100 head which will go
forward tomorrow. He is much pleased
with this market but says he can not get
satisfactory freight rates out of here. His
people use upward of 400 cattle a month,
end he will purchase them on this market
If he can get satisfactory rates.

A SOUKCE OF WONDER.
A Correspondent ivlth Map Astonishes a
Company or Cossacks.
A ncwspaier correspondent, David Her,
traveling in Central Asia, came one- cveuing
upon a Cossack camp. Fires wero blazing and
round them stretched the men, resting after
a hard day's march. The traveler had been
long on the road, and with his white Russian
forage cap and travel stained clothing looked,
go much like the Cossacks themselves that ho
entered the camp unnoticed. Then he sat
down on a stone and took out a colored map
of the country, knowing well that the strange
sight would bring the men abpjit him imme
diately. V
'So it proved. I suddenly became aware of
a gaunt, sallow, gray mustached visage so
criss crosed with saber scars as to look like a
railway map peering over my shoulder.
Then another and another camo edging in,
till I was completely surrounded by wild
figures and grim faces.
'"What's that picture, father? "We can't
quite make it out.'
" 'It's not a picture at all, brothers it's a
plan that shows me the very way by which
you have come here from holy Russia, and
all tho places you have passed through.'
"Then, seeming not to notice the looks of
unbelief and the meaning grins with which
my hearers received what they considered to
be a moit outrageous lie, I went on:
" 'Up here at Orenburg you passed the
Ural river, aud then marched eastward to
Orsk, where you crossed the frontier and
turned to the southeast.'
" 'So wo did, comrades,' sbontcd half a
dozen voices at once. 'He speaks the truth
so we did.'
" 'Then you passed Fort Jlara Butak,
crossed tho Kara Koura desert, and halted
hera and here and here,' naming and des
cribing the various posts.
'The Cossacks listened opened mouthed to
tho familiar names, and the excited clamor
was followed by a silence of utter amaze
ment. Then ono said:
" 'Father, can you show us the very place
where wo are now?'
" 'To be tuie I can, my iad. See, that
black spot is the village yonder; there's the
river twisting and winding, and here is you;
camp.'
"There was another pause of blank b&
wilderment, and then tho scarred veteran
with tho gray mustache asked in an awe
stricken whisper:
" 'But, father, tell mo for the love of
heaven if we've marched 1,000 miles since
leaving holy Russia, bow can it go into a
scrap of peper no bigger than an Eastr

Rapid Bridco Baildlnjr.
A piece of rapid work in bridge building,
done oa the copper bridge on the Oregon and
Washington Territory railway, deserves rec
ord. There were twenty-fire bents of trestle,
averaging a height of twenty-five fet, the
frame bents resting oa a piie fonndation with
ten degrees curve on the bridge. On Thcrs
day morning there was no a stick of timber
on the ground; a tram creased the bridge on
Sunday, three day3 afterward. The raising
gang, composed of thirteen men and fore
man, raised the fifty -one bents on Sasurday.
