LOCOED WORSES. Singular Effects of tho Loco or Rattl Weed Upon Ilorso Bcnae. Col. Juan D. McCarthy, of California, sat. aiono at a table in the Hoffman bouse nervously fingering the big quartz links of his watch chain and wondering what had become of all the men of his acquaintance. He wantsd somebody to hear him talk, and he was just about to send for Billy Ed wards and ask him to bring somebody in by main force when his eye fell upon a man who was known to him as a good lis tener. The colonel 6hoved his slouch back and cheerily said, "Hi, there;" Then he added, "You're just the man I wanted to see." "Did you ever see a locoed horse?" said the colonel. "Of course you never did, but I wan reminded of the subject by seeing tho term used in last Sunday's Sun. It's a subject that causes mora argument and row among the stockmen of California than the price of beef ever did. A locoed horse is tba worst piece of property a man can own, nextto acoracr lot in an addition to a bnrstod boom town. Ton never can tell what tho critter wfll do nor when ho will do it. He behaves as though he wero half asleep most of the timfc but just when he ought to be asleep ho'll d more fool things than you can keep cases on. If you stake him out near camp he'll rrind him self all-up in the stake rope until he can't walk, and then 11 suddenly pretend that something has frightened him and begin to kick and snort and turn somersaults. The racket awakens you, and supposing that a p&nxher has jimped the horso you rush out to help kirn. It takes yoa ten minuls to unto&gle.the horse, and as soon as he gets upon his fpet he kicks at you or knocks yon down with his stnpjd old head. And then you're sorry a panther hadn't tccklcd him. '"The locoed horse may hove been used under a&dd!e all his bis, but some day when you -want to peddle him he will dis cover that the blanket is a ravenous mons ter that warns to devour hist, and you can't get acywherejneir the brula. If he's tied up you have to cat ths rope to save him from disfaeatinz kis neck in his efforts to escape from tht bloodthirsty saddle blanket. Such tricks-as lying dosca in the "J13ie eLa pjriubiij2iier head, into a hunch of cac"joae-gdclb be prepared for at anjr-thne. "I remember a locoed horsa that Sam Beacham had when we were jncspecting on the Castac. Sam ittartitr tfisft plug was a Jim dandy, and'wsdlaiit achniCthat he was locoed. Billy;lad:t3io meanest gait you ever saw, sometBinRjtweeii loping and pacing, and he snorted with every breath he-drew. If-you tried .to" lead Mm he'd fall down UMpore waS9.2jaji a circus clown could think ofandomeiimes when ho stuck his no$a krto a pan of barley his lurid imagination- tvbnldV transform each grain into, a. sea serpent ox -a roaring-wog-gly-bob, and away.hercl .ger snorting like a locomotive and tumbling down hill over his own feet. "You want to know the cause of loco? Well, that's what the,.stockmen quarrel about. Most people believe that the loco ilanfc is-responsible for the- disease. It is a ow plant that grows in ponty all over the semi-'barran land of tho west. It bears pods that become very dry in the summer and rattle when tha wind moves them. I don't know the botanical name, but one of the popular names is "rattle weed.' It is not.good forage, but stock will eat it when feed isscarce. "Some stockmen declare that this rattle weed will make a horse crazy, but others scout the idea and protest that the 'loco' property of the rattling pod is all supersti tion. A cattleman in southern California assured ineihat his harass had eaten rattle weedfor twenty-five years, cr at least had had free opportunity to eat It, but he never had a locoed horse on-the range until after the sheep began feeding over the country in big bands. His theory is that the sheep tick crawled in the hordes' ears, burrowed and laid eggs, and affected the animals just 03 a spider might affect a man by crawling into his car and waltzing around on his tympanum. If you have ever had a bug in your ear you know how that f eela. ".Now, I don't know how much truth there is in the tick theory about locoed horses, although tho cattleman swore he had found ticks in the ears of his crary broncoes. You see, every cattleman hates sheep with religious fervor, and attributes everything bad to them. I asked a Kern county cattleman one day how he accounted for earthquakes in California, and he re plied: 'It's them infernal sheep, I reckon.' " New York Sun. TUo Tevcr microbe. An illustration of a strange fact is found in the experience with the Jamestown, now the training ship at Baltimore. On ono of her trips yellow fever appeared on board and several deaths followed. Subse quently tho vessel was thoroughly reno vated and extensively repaired. Her wood work was steamed. Then she remained in northern harbors for several winters. She was finally ordered south again, and be fore she reached the fever district a case was developed and the patient died. Above his hammock was found a quantity of filth. Tho woodwork' wa3 torn out and the filth removed. But she, is stHl a fever ship. Then, again, Is tfiia caso of the Portsmouth. She once had fever on board. Long afterward sho was ordered to Norfolk for repairs. Naval Constructor Hichborn had charge of the work. A num ber of his workmen died, and he himself was taken down with typhoid fever and his life was despaired of. It is true, that once a fever ship always a fever ship. Ex change. Not an Intelligent "Dog. "Is that an intelligent dog? Looks like one." The response was quick and angry: "No, sir! That dog is seventeen different kinds of a fool. I'm engaged, you know, to Miss A. She's profoundly jealous of Miss B. , to whom I formerly paid attention. Well, the other evening the. dog was with me, when I happened to meet-Miss B. I walked homo with her and stood for a mo ment at the door. While we chatted tho young woman I belong to passed by on-the other side of .the street, without noticing us, and then that beast waked out of a sound sleep, gave a tremendous bark, rushed over to Miss A. and the,n back and forth between us, until an electric light couldn't havo made things any clearer. Ono morning Elsio chanced to overhear her parents lamenting tho godless state of this family, and her little soul was filled with pity and dismay. .Running out to the-front gate, the little missionary called out, with swoet entreaty, to the benighted little neighbor across the way: "Oh, poor little boy, come over to our house and go to heaven with usr -Xjpr York Tribune An Antnor' EooeoTricrtfea. In fact, I question whether Steven son could do anything to surpriso his friends. Tho odd and unexpected have be come synonyms with bis noma. Ho never seems to know his own mlad from one day into another, and were he to-morrow to turn up in Now York his friends would merely arch their eyebrowB.
