The account of Moses and the burning bush gives an antiquity of over 3,000 years to thejhoe. Among the ancient Hebrews, shoes were made of leather, rush or wool, those of 6oldiers being of brass or iron. In Denmark, elder unmarried sisters dance at a younger sister's wedding with out shoes, to counteract their ill luck and procure them husbands. Sir "Walter Raleigh wore the most gor geous pair of shoes ever made. They were covered with precious stones, of a value of about $50,000 of our money. Royalty has not escaped the custom of throwing the old shoe. It was practiced on Queen Victoria when she entered the new castle of Balmoral in 1855. Chinese women, to secure the blessing of children, get a shoe at the temple of the goddess of children, and return it to the temple if tho object is accomplished. On St. Nicholas' day in Italy persons hide presents in the shoes and slippers of those whom they wish to honor. This festival is called "Zapata," which means shoe. In 12S1 a Chinese embassy of ten nobles and 1,000 horsemen were put to death by order of the king of Siam, because they in sisted on appearing in the royal presence with their shoes on.
