Receipts of Live Stock at the Union Stock Yards during the past 48 tours 167 cattle, 803 hogs. Shipments 127 cattle, 1,330 hogs, and 288 sheep. The cattle supply was fair, in fact there were more offered than found buyers, although there was some improvement in the de mand today. There was a car load of good butchers cows and heifers which sold to one of the packers for a good price, considering the state of the mar ket. Nearly all the other stuff which changed hands was rather common. There is a better feeling on eastern mar . kets and prices on good to choice " grades are stronger. The demand here is rather moderate. Good fat butchers grades in fair demand. The hog mar ket opened fully 5 cents higher than Saturday's close and ruled steady throughout. All but one load of pack ers grades sold at $3.45. The close was steady. Packers seem to think they will buy their hogs for less money to- morrow. "WTOHITA LIVE STOOK MAEKET. Wichita. Kan.. Morris & Butt, Kansas City, have just received twenty-one out of their order of 300 double deck stock cars for shipping heavy hogs to Old Mexico, and twelve of them were loaded here last night and started on their long journey. There are several improvements in them that are not found in the regular stock car. They are about eight inches wider which make them more roomy. They are also sheath ed np under the roof making an air space and therefore much cooler for hogs on the tipper deck. They have iron troughs run ning clear round the car which is a decid ed improvement and Mr. Hog seemed to enjoy starting off in his palace car. They made up a very liandsome train as they are painted a bright stmw color with black trimmings, and labled The Kansas City and Mexico Transportation Co. Pork Packlnc and Provisions. Cincinnati Price Current, July 10. The week's packing in the west has been .15 000 hogs, or 20.000 less than the preced ing week, and 80.000 in excess of corres ponding time last year, when the total was 22o 000. Since March 1 the aggregate is 4,750,000 hoes, against 4,125.000 last year nn increased 625,000, or slightly over la per cent. Prices of hogs have improved considerably durins the week, and close about 20c per hundred pounds higher than a week ago on the average for western points. In the provision trade there lias been no special animation. The Chicago market has changed but moderately, clos Sng with a small advance on lard and short rib sides compared with a week ago. The distributing trade continues good and the export of produce for the week were quite large, 40 per cent in excess of correspond ing period last year, the greater gain being in lard. There has been bo little change in values of leading arti cles at Chicago in the past several weeks that speculative interest in hog product, has been encouraged, especially in view of the continued free movement of hogs and the concentration of liberal stock in Chi cago: Just now there is some ground for apprehension concerning the condition of corn crop, which is threatened with impair ment in many districts in the west unless relief is soon reached by rains. Should the general situation of the crop be materially reduced in promise it is likely it would have Eome influence in stimulating the prices of hoes and of products unless there should develop a disposition to has ten marketing operations, short of the ma turity of the stock, and thus keep up tem porarily or for a time a liberal movement, at the expense of supplies later on in the season. IN Curious Ways in Which the Water Birds, Hawks, Owls anil Other Powl Are an Assistance to Mankind Habits of Manj "Well Known Teathcred Creataros. In recent years mu.ch attention has been paid by naturalists to examining the stom achs of various birds in order to ascertain the character of their food. . In thoso of most water fowl a percentage of seeds and roots of aquatic plants has been found. A subject well worthy .'ofjicbnsideration is whether-the migratory1 instincts of all water fowl is not partially utilized to carry these seeds and roots to points far distant from one another, which could not be reached by water currents, thus perform ing tho part for water plants that air cur rents do for terrestrial growths. Shoro birds, such as snipe, sand pipers, yellow legs, plover, devour largo quantities of beetles and worms injurious to shore and shallow water plants. They also assist in the transporting of seeds from placa to place. On toast their transporting quali ties affect us in another way. Owls and hawks until within late years have had only tho uncommercial value, of wisdom and. sharp. sight allotted them. But by a shorter method than the 6tomach pump investigators have clearly shown that few more valuablo birds to tho agri culturist exist, and now, instead of offered premiums for their scalps, they aro allowed A retain them, and are protected by law in their possession. Their chicken thieving is an epicurean eccentricity not worth con sidering when compared" with their habit ual consumption of mice and other small animals which do great injury to the farmers' trees and-crops. Tho farmers' poultry is under his immediata protection, but he cannot well go mousing to save his products. MA2TT KINDS OF HAWKS. Undoubtedly the entire falcon family demonstrate that bird will eat bird, but the varieties devoured- bycnioat of them in any appreciable quantity are: such as are indirectly useful to man as insect killers only. The appetite and capacity of ono hawk for insects much more tbjm compen sate for tliose of all.'tlie birds it-kills. The sparrowthawk is by far the most numerous of its species. .Its chief food is grasshoppers. "When this insect is to be had the, ni03t tempting morsels in feathers are eschewed. The red shouldered or chicken hawk, as iti is miscalled, seldom eats chickens; then in winfer only. ltd food consists of small quadrupeds, small birds, lizards, frogs, snakes and insects. The marsh hawk the sportsman's spe cial antipathy never preys upon the gamo for which sportsmen seek. It is a rapacious eater, varying its bill of tare with frogs, coleopterous insects and diminutive mem bers of the feathered tribe. Tho sharp shinned or partridge hawk is the Robespierre of the air blood, blood, no matter whence it comes". lie haa a liking for spring chicken, raw, garnished with feathers. Hy finds quails toothsome and ducks pre-eminently to his taste Tie passes sentence Upon almost everything that ilics, yet tho number of theso he kills is unim portant when compared with the entrees of his bill of fare. In fact tho sharp shinned and the cooper's hawk are the only members of a largu family that have a few tastes in common with man. Because of this alleged sin the immense good they do should not be forgotten. THE USEFUL OWL. Owls continue by night the good work of the hawks by day; mice, moles and reptiles are their regular food. The- barred or hoot owl and tho great horned owl are the only members of the family having an unsavory reputation. The barred owl claims right of priority to an occasional partridge, and retaliates upon the sportsman's encroach ment upon its preserves by foraging upon the chicken yard. It feeds principally upon mice and small birds and reptiles. Tho great horned owl is singular in its partiality for skunk (no one should enter tain malice toward it for that). Jts chil dren cry for it. Its nests arc invariably infected by its odor. WThilo its food con sists of pheasants, largo game, ducks and poultry, the dining on asingle skunk gives it reapeetablo standing as a friend to tho poultry raiser and sportsman, together with all having noses in any degree moro sensitive than wax onea. The barn owl outrivals tho cat as a mouscr and as a nerve stirring musician by tho eloquence of its silence. For fifteen years within the writer's knowledgo a neighborly pair of screoch owls have dwelt upon a west Philadelphia lawn, in tho xnfdst of an unusual quantity of nesting birds and in close contiguity tv a chickon yard, without routing a nest of disturbing a chicken, so far as any indica tion has ever shown. Bir.DS THAT EAT IXSECTS. Birds other than owls, that care for men's interests while men sleep are tho whip-poor-will and night hawk. They live upon butterflies and moths, but enterpris ing experimenters have bicn known to try the potato beetle, and it is to be hoped that they were pleased. Dr. Warner fou ml them in the stomach of a whip-poor-will, which undoubtedly indicates a fondness for them or two inconceivable blunders in succes sion. Insects arc such rapid breeders and so prolific that without the insect eating birdc wc would havo ten thousand plagues. Upon excellent authority the ancient Egyp tians fonndone that of tho grasshoppers to be enough, and occasionally in our own good time we have had oitter experience of what the tiny pests can do when helped by favoring, seasoas or are unchecked in their proclivities for large families. Tho arm worm, grasshopper, potato beetle, wheafc weevil, curcano, the ubiquitous raosquitc and unrivalled leaf destroyed zcrastn raw ing anathematized mfrvsiinng worm, the various caterpillars, havo devastated vast regions, injured entire crops, stripped citi-c of their leafy luns and protecting shade trees, and kept human wrath at a monop olizing temperature. The caterpillar of the apple tree and the lame of fruit Injnrins insects are faroriUss of the csclcoo. To the fruit growers it Js invaluAbrs. and tho farmer heeds its prog nosticatioas of corning rain with far mora certainty than those of the bvt of aneroids.
