PADEREWSKI, THE PIANIST.
the Opinions of Some He Is the
Greatest Since Itubenstein.
In
IGNACE J. PADSREWSKI.
"A male Bernhardt all nerves and art."
That is the way Isnace J. Paderewski, tho
Polish pianist, was described by an Eng
lish critic.
The advent of this red haired, blue eyed
Pole into the musical world of England
nnd America has caused a veritable sensa
tion tliis year. Critics and public alike
have raved over his achievements, some
even going so far as to pronounce him a
successor to Rnl'etein This estimate of
his ability ha? been questioned by many,
but the undoubted fact remains that he is
a pianist of remarkable skill and power.
He was born in Podoria, Poland, tiirty
one years ago. As soon as he was able to
reach the keyboard of a piano he began to
play, and gained eome local reputation ab
an infant prodigy. As be grew older he
turned his attention principally to com
position, and acaieved a really notable
name for so young a man. He studied un
der Leschetitzky, the hnsband of the fa
mons Mme. EssifofT. and played at a con
cert, or two. His work was so enthusias
tically received that he gave np composi
tion for the life of a piano virtuoso. Since
he began his concert tour of the great
cities of the world each new appearance
has been a new triumph.
His earliest real successes as & virtuoso
were won in Paris, where he played with
the Lamoureux orchestra and at the Con
servatoire. By no means the least notable
feature of bU wore is tbe extent of his rep
ertory, which includes pretty nearly all
the great pianoforte classics as well as
numberle-; compositions of his own ami
many prcrftiction m composers latle
known on t. ul t i the water.

The Duke of Saxe-Meiningen's
Famous Company.
THOUSANDS GP FINE C0STUXE&
An ATerage of Seven Hundred for Each
Play In the Repertory Solid SilTer
Candelabra Twelve Feet High Used on
the Stage.
A company of players organized and
trained by a nobleman, and presenting
dramas with a magnificence never before
approached on this side of the Atlantic, is
now in America. These actors and
actresses formed, until a short time aeo,
the court company of the Duke of Saxe
Meiningen, and are known as the ilel-
FRATJLEIN HAVERLAND.
ningers. They have long been world famous
in a way that is, stories of the princely
extravagance of outlay which accompanied
their performances have for years floated
around among the newspapers. But these j
stories were accepted more as interesting
romances than as fact, and tho Meininger

as a myth. Its appearance in New York
has proved conclusively its existence, and
the eyes of the doubters have seen for them
selves that it in many respects justifies all
the tales told by the European correspond
ents. It is the culmination of the most re
markable fad the world ever saw.
George II, duke of Saxe-Meiningen, ia
sixty-seven years old. Since his childhood
he has been a lover of the drama, and since
1SC6 he has devoted practically his entire
time and a large portion of his magnificent
fortune to the direction of performances at
his court theater in Meiningen.
The ono object he has constantly kept in
view has been the perfection of scenic and
spectacular effects. He has carried this
idea to an extreme never dreamed of by
any one else.
HERR KNORR.
As many of the original properties aa
possible have been brought to America.
When stored in New York they actually
occupied three floors of a big building.
For the play of "Julius Caesar" there are
over (00 costumes, ror tne Teutons ana
Cymbri are dresses of skins and barbaric
decorations of strings of animals carved
from wood, teeth and brass trinkets. The
armor of the Roman soldiers is made from
the old Roman designs and is battered and
tarnished as if just from the battlefield.
Pompey's statue, at the foot of which
Caesar dies, is a splendid work of art eight
een feet high and modeled by a famous
German sculptor.
For the play of "Mary Stewart" two
solid silver candelabra are provided, each
twelve feet high. They " ?14,tX0. The
costumes are mairi """! -, t .omj of Queen
Elizabeth and hert irt ladies being valued
at ?3,000 each. For this play, too, there are
over 700 costumes, many of them being of
the richest plush, silk and satin, embel
lished with jewels and heavy ornaments of
gold and silver brocades.
HERR WENKHAUS.
An idea of the care exercis-ed in the per
formances, may be gathered from the fact
that in mob and martial scenes where
"supers" are employed, the untrained men
are divided into croups of three, each of
which is placed in charge of a man thor-
onghlv instructed in the work required of
him and tbnsp nnrior him Thw lMdprn 1
mm ana kuose unaer mm. l nese ieaaers
of the supers were all brought from Ger-
many,
r. i
In the original company there were forty-
two speaking actors, tmrty actors who led !
the supers and fifty persons behind the ,
scenes. The American company contains
thirty-two of the peaking actors, all of the
