year, has derived from her illness a rare
beauty, composed of the soft sweetness ol
two deep black eyes, setting off the pale
ness of a face which seems illumined.
Mrs. Susan C. Yeomans, of Walworth
N. Y., has been appointed by Governoi
Flower a trustee of the State Asylum foi
Feeble Minded Women in Wayne county.
She is a sister of ex-President Cleveland.
Miss Louisa Macdonald, the recentlj
elected principal of the New University
College for Women at Sydney, N. S. W., is
only thirty-three years old. She has a
splendid record as a classical scholar and a
student of classical history, and has a rep
utation as an archaeologist.
John Francis, the big trapper and hunt
er of the Penobscot Indians, has a daugh
ter, Alice, aged eighteen, who is described
as a very pretty and graceful girl, whe
speaks English, French and the dialect ol
the Tarratini tribe, plays the piano and
does several kinds of fancy work.
Mrs. Montagu, whose horrible cruelty
led to the death of her three-year-old
daughter, ha3 a great reputation in the
north of Ireland for her skill in breaking
and managing high spirited and vicious
horses. As a horsewoman she is said to
have a wonderful seat and is a daring
cross country rider.
The public portraits of Mrs. Deacon, the
heroine of the Cannes tragedy, recall in a
striking way the pictures of Baroness Vec
sera, whose love for the Crown Prince
Rudolph caused her death. There is a
noteworthy resemblance in the shape of
the head, the arrangement of the hair, the
eyes and the curl of the eye lashes.

In South America there is a beetle even
bigger than the Hercules beetle. It Ls over

A cat recently killed a 5-foot alligator in
Florida. It jumped on the reptile and bit
through the tender hide of the neck until
it reached the vital part.
In certain parts of the Mediterranean a
species of mussel is found of which the
shells are about seven inches long and three
inches broad, and each of them contains a
piece of the fiber, weighing half a dram,
from whicli spun and woven goods are
made.
Among the queerest crustaceans are
"lady crabs," or "sand crabs," which are
abundant on sandy shores from Cape Cod
to Florida and in the Gulf of Mexico.
Their bodies are roughly six sided, white
in color and marked with specks of red and
purple on the back.
Ostrich farming is one of the important
industries in South Africa, which as yet
furnishes the bulk of the ostrich plumes
for the markets of the world. There are
probably 200,000 domesticated ostriches in
Cape Colony. Each bird is supposed to net
his owner forty dollars per annum.

A continuous clambake will be one of
the attractions which epicurean visitors
will find at the exposition.
Saginaw, Mich., noted as a salt produc
ing city, is co tructing in miniature a
complete salt plant for exhibition at the
World's fair.
Mme. Regina Maney, of Lisbon, a lineal
descendant of the wife of Columbus, is pre
paring a genealogical tree of the Colum
bus family for exhibition at the World's
fair.
The cottage in which George Fox, the
founder of the Society of Friends or Quak
ers, was born, in Leicestershire, England,
is being taken down to be re-erected in

A California "big tree" has been select
ed in Tulare countv to be shown at the ex
position. A committee of the board of
trade, after an extended tour of inspec
tion, picked out a tree measuring 87 feet 9
inches in circumference at the base, 85 feet
above the ground and 65 feet at a height
of 16 feet.
Harper Bros., Scribner & Sons and The
Century company have agreed to exhibit
at the fair illustrations showing the his
tory of transportation in all countries.
Chief Smith expects to secure similar ex
hibits from foreign countries and from
other publishers in this country. The ex
hibit will include reproductions of litho
graphs, original drawings and photo

A new color in carnations has appeared
in the variety known as "Kaiser Wilhelm,"
a recent importation from Germany. It is
a violet purple of the richest shade of per
fect form. The plants are literally covered
with blooms.
In New Zealand there are miles of kauris
whose average height is not less than 100
feet and whose girth is not less than 30
feet and 40 feet. The largest kauri yet
discovered was 70 feet in Jgirth and the
trunk was 200 feet high.
