These t'.vo roads are in Colombia, and
are sometimes mentioned either as
future feeder? of the Pan-American
railroad, or parts of its main line. On
the Antioquia road, if the under
growth were cut at the beginning of
the rainy season, less than two months'
rain was sufficient to form an arch of
green trees thirty feet high, leaning
ovsr the- track so as to shade it com
pletely. The constant change from dryness
in the day to soaking moisture at
night, even in the dry season, would
soon ruin the best timber, but nature
furnishes a still quicker means of
getting rid of it, in the shape of an ant
or wood-louse, which is careful not to
mar the outside of his domicile, but
will patiently honeycomb the inside,
until what looks like a solid twelve-by-twelve
stick is but a shell from one
eighth to one-fourth inch thick, filled
with dust and ants. The native tim
ber suffered so much from the inroads
of these pests that, upon hearing that
yellow pino was u-ed in Panama to
avoid them, a trial of it was made qn
the Antioquia road. Georgia pine had
to be shipped by way of New York, at
a cost of nearly S100 per 1.000 feet,
board measure, when put in place.
When I left there the first of my yel
low pine trestles was being replaced.
It had tttien built less than four ears.

them little, and the sound of the whistle
was little better than Greek. They did
not comprehend it. In a few seconds
the engine was upon them. A unani

they made great efforts to escape. The
truth is that they did escape from, the
track, but the draft made by the rapid
movement sucked the entire flock back
under the wheels again. Xearly all
were killed.

People "niio Claim rarmrat for Injuries

Are Ailepts in the Disrep

"There is a certain class of people
who make a good living by claiming
damages for injuries which they have

Journal reporter.
"These fakirs arc constantly trying

"Women are xery clever at this new

"but at this she bridled up and declared
that she would allow no one but her
family physician to make an examina

to suspect that the w oman was not as

I think she must have divined my
