There Is "wine that is mingled "with

A RAILROAD STORY,
j A very amusing Incident happened on
the mixed train from Wichita to Engle
j wood ono day last week that will not pass
oy unnoticed, at isnt in the order of
things that such trains should travel very
rapidly and sometimes there is consid
erable growling among the traffic. "Are
we most there, conductor?" asked a
nervous man for the hundredth time.
"Remember, my wife is sick and I am
anxious." "We'll get there on time," re
plied the conductor, stolidly. Half an
hour later the nervous man approached
him again. "I guess she's dead now,"
said he mournfully, "but I'd give you
something extra If you could manage to
catch up with the funeral. Maybe she
won't be so decomposed but what I could
recognize her." The conductor growled
at him and he subsided. "Conductor,"
said he, after an hour's silence, "if the
wind Isn't dead ahead I wish you would
put on some steam. I'd like to see where
my iwife is buried before the tombstone
crumbles to pieces. Put yourself in my
place for a moment." The conductor
shock him off and he relapsed into pro
found melancholy. "I say, yju conduc
tor," said he, after a long pause, "I've
ot a note coming due ln three months.
: run't von m it n n i oir.no-
little." "If you come near me again I'll
knock you down," snorted the conductor,
savagely. The nervous man regarded him
sadly and went to his seat Two hours
later tho conductor saw him chatting
gaily and laughing heartily with a brother
victim and approached him. "Don't feel
so badly about your wife's death?"
"Time heals all wounds," sighed the nerv
ous man. "And you are not so particular
about the note?" sneered the conductor.
"Not now. That's all right. I've been
figuring up and I find the note has been
outlawed since I spoke to you last."
NEW WICHITA INDUSTRY.

HUMORS OF SMALL CHANGE
The motorneers and conductors on the
several lines of street tramways in the
city all concur in the statement that days
will run in remarkable evenness in regard
to the money denominations they receive.
For instance there will be several days
when they receive almost nothing else hut
quarters. Then will come a day or two
of half dollars, then dollars, and perhaps
there will follow a period of nothing but
dimes. All motorneers and conductors
are always provided with change up to
two dollars, and are ready at any time to
change any piece of coin, but as it aver
ages week in and week out, they say the
days rarely or never run mixed. It is
either one amount or another, but each
