The Indian Snow-Ball Fight,
A correspondent of tho Philadelphia
7iwi gives an interesting account of a
snow-ball battle between a party of Cheyen
ne nml Sionx boys, each numbering about
twenty-live, ns witnessed from a steamer's
deck on the Ucd Hivcr of the North. In
tho ope n iug of the skirmish, says tho
writer, tho opposing b.uids wero twenty or
thirty ynrds apart so far, indeed, that few
of tho boys wero hit, been urn thoy evi
dently know how to dodge. It wns- like a
g.iino of ''corner-ball " at n country district
school, thu plnyors ducking their heads
nnd bounding aside whenever n missile
would whiz past. Hut ns soon as the red
lads hnd becomo warmed to the sport, the
distance wns quickly shortened. Tho snow
disappeared trum tho skirmish line ns
though melted by the hot breath of tho lit
tlo sons of thu plain, nud tho battle-ground
wns shifted to n point nlmost under thu
side of tho steamer. Tho Sioux youths
pressed harder nnd harder. Thoy wero led
by n tall supple fellow of fifteen" or there
nbout, who hurled the balls with tho forco
of n grown warrior, nud the precision of nn
old nrtillcrymnn. His moccasins wcro in
his way, nnd so, tearing them from his feet,
ho wrapped them in n hnrd packing of
snow, nnd sent them whistling into the ranks
of tho enemy. This net kindled tho firo on
tho Sioux side, a dozen of the lads nt onco
stripping to tho wnist nud running forwnrd
with wild cries.
It wns clear enough that tho hand-to-hand
nttnek had been expected, for n
number of tho Cheycuucs, who had held
themselves in the renr of tho pirty, sprang
forwnrd nnd grappled with tho Sioux. Ono
of tho pr.ssengers, who stood on tho stenm
cr's cabin 6nys ho never saw n charge so
completely mot. Every Sioux found his
Cheyonno as if tho wholo matter hnd been
prearranged. No blows were struck, but
the wrestling wns fiurco nnd uivngoly
heroic. Tho wrestlers wero in n straight
lino, nor did tho lino wnvor. Tho Sioux
grip was on tho Cheyenne, and tho Cheyen
ne clutch was about tho shoulder of tho
Sioux. Somo of tho spectators on tho
steamer wero so excited thnt they sprang
nshoro nnd ran townrd tho wrestlers, but
thoy ns quickly rnu back ngaiu, thoso who
woro not wrestling pepenng them with
balls, as a hint that thero must bo uo inter
ference. Tho wrestlers stood nlmost still
for moro than n quarter of nn hour, overy
uervo strained to its utmost tension.
Meanwhile tho boys who wcro not in tho
lino ceased their volleys nud waited for tho
result. Tho tall leader of tho Sioux had
for his opponent a boy of about 17 a
strong, wiry fellow, who once had wrestled
with, thrown, and killed a full-grown bear.
Down his chest was a long, ugly scar thnt
hnd been cut by tho bear's cluws, nnd in
tho back of his neck was tho imprint of
the bear's teeth. Tho Boy.Who-Killedtho
Bear swayed back aud forth, straining
with his utmost strength to weakeu tho
Sioux lnd's hold. Finding that this could
not bo done, ho slackened his hold and tho
Sioux iustantly backed nwny. This np
peared a Ei'gnal to all tho wrestlers, fur
they also let go nnd retired. After n short
rest a volley thrown by tho Cheyenne
brought on tho battle. Tho lines now wero
not moro than ten yards apart, and tho
thud nnd bursting of tho balls indicated
that tho 'closo work was telling.
Tho wild fusilndo was succeeded by a
clinching all around, and such a rough-and-tumble
play tho spectators never saw. Tho
Sioux leader seized n Cbeyenno lad by tho
shoulders and sent him head furernust into
tho river. Loud cries went up from the
Cbeycniies, including tho Boy-Who-Killcd-tho-Bear,
who pinioned tho Sioux leader's
arm nnd rubbed his bead iu tho snow, filling
bis mouth, nostrils and cars. They then drag
ged him toward tho river, but before they
could givo the toss that would send him
into tho stream, they wero attacked hnrum
scarum aud holtor-skelter by tho whole
Sioux band. A trapper, who understood
tho Cheyeuno tonguo and who hnppeued to
bo on tho steamer, said tho Choyonnes wero
shontiug: " Drown him, drown him, " nnd
that tho gesticulating grown warriors on
tho outskirts of tho battle-field wcroscrcam
iug " Fair play. "
Whatever thoy may havo been trying to
say, thero certainly was a tremendous hub
bub, in tho midst of which the Sioux leader
broke from tho grasp of his assailants, and
throw himself p-witing nud perspiring, in
tho arms of his fellows. At this turn ii
tho battlo, tho men of both tho Sioux nnd
Chcycnno bandf, who hnd been nttracted
to tho scono by tho terrific yells, interfered,
nnd both partieR shook hands nnd retired.
Tho Cheyeuno who had been thrown into
tho river did not seem to mind tho ducking,
for ho walked slowly off with tho others,
laughing as bo wont. Aud so ended tho
