tho latter nitrt of this somewhat high-flown
ventencu tho editor was udvocnting tho in
termarriage of foreigners with natives.
Thv law thvu required, in a matrimonial

devoted two nud n half columns to nn ad

there was a good deal of wit aud humor in
tho "Tongataboo Pa pert," which, begin

paper, woro continued for several months.
Their authorship was geuorally nkcribed to
Mr. Abell. Datod at Tongataboo, they
purported to givo a history of the Oovtiru
went there aud sketches of the principal
officials; hut of course the object was to
satirise the Government and to latupoou
the officials in the Sandwich Island. Here
is a specimeu from tho opeuiug letter, which
will give an idea of the writer's ironical
fctylo: "For a great many years the man

montous, seoniod to make it nn object to

wasn state of things which tho 'enlightened
neco.silios' of certain foreigners could not
brook. Their pockets woro empty nnd
thoir inkstands full, and thoy felt an im
perative nnd most philanthropic call to res
ouo tho nation from tlio barbarous quiet

and filling tho foolscap of tho country."
Tho incisive, stylo in which this writor
drew tho portraits of tho Ministers, wns, nt
the time, very highly relished in the com
munity nnd wns tho current topic of
romnrlc in places of public resort, such ns
F. W. Thompson's miction room, Mnkce it

stores. Beginning with the Attorney Gen
eral Ricord, ho wns thus satirized : " Tho

reflection of Blackstonc, Coko nnd Cliitty
nn echo of Latin, law and lingo ono who
wns deep in tho knowlcdgo of tho mpprawio
vcri, nnd learned in tho mysteries of tho
suggcitio falsi a man whose natural abili
ties would havo placed him on n footing
with tho greatest natural ever bom, nnd to
whoso acquired advantages not nil tho

Luckily for those of ns who nro now in
power, tho foolish nnd mistaken notions of
simplicity nnd honesty nro now nil exploded,
nnd tho stnto has so far advanced in tho
perfection of policy nnd diplomacy, thnt a
public officer can rropeatcdty writo n false
hood in official communications, nnd when
delected, 'proudly defend it in open court
with tho triumphant declaration that ho
lied ' ns n lawyer,' nnd that this was a part
of his duty to tho King."
'Mr. Richards, the Minister of Public
Instruction, was still more nnmcrcifully
satirized in his character of Commissioner
to Europe as "Envoy Vory Ordiunry of tho
Majesty of Tongataboo," nnd it was plain
ly intimated that Brinsmado wroto nil bis
official letters. But Dr. Judd, ns tho
nckoowlcgcd Primo Ministor of tho King,
was most severely criticized in theso let
ters. His indomitable firmness of char
acter hnd mndo him enemies, whoso bilo
found freo vont in tbo JVcicjc. An extended
(cnricntnro of the Doctor concluded in thoo
words : " As Minister of Finance his full
dress uniform is n broad-brimmed whito
hat, two gold crowns, a big chow of
tobacco, nnd n red ribbon jnst six inches
broad." Mr. Wylio, tho Minister of For
cign Relations, was most industrious with
tho pon. (It is n great pity that an onomy
destroyed his voluminous journals.) Said
tho Tongataboo correspondent "Ho wroto
becausn ho could not help it. It wns a
disenso of his organization. Tho cacotthe
scribtiuli infected every drop of his blood,
and ho must writo or givo up tbo ghost.
In personal appoaranco H. T.
M's. V. Relations bears a striking rosom
blanco to Lord Brougham, especially in tho
pittern of his trousors n fact of which ho
is justly proud nnd that his present full
dress, whou visiting n ship-of-wnr, is n
whito star upon his bronst, two yellow
crowns upon ids collar, a beautiful russet
moustacho upon his faco, nnd n crimson
riband ncross his shouldor, just half nn
inch brondor than tho regulation riband
worn by tho othor Ministers of State."
Bosides tho editorial big guns, there was
n constnnt nro of small-arm communica
tions in tho jVcim, bristlinir with com
plaints of every imaginable sort against
Government otlkinls, from Ministers to
judges down to tho police. Tho King was
nominally "Chief Judgo of tho Supreme
Court," whito Gov. Kukunnaoa was the
Presiding Judgo for tho Island ofOahu,
nud Judgo Andrews wns "Judgo in for
eign casus.'' Iu tho Court of tho latter,
Peter A. Brinsmado instituted n suit for
libel against Jamos J. Jarvcs, editor of the
J'oliitwian newspaper and " Director of
tho Government Press," the damages being
laid nt $50,000. Tho sujt was based upon
certain nlleged slanderous nrticlos publish
ed in the I'olyncsinn, which in Mr. Brins
made's opinion woro calculated deeply to
affect his privnto character, both hero nud
clsowhore. Judgo Androws caused u jury
to bn drawn to try tho case nnd n day was
set for tho trial, but Mr. Ricord, nB coun
sel fur Jarvcs, procurod nn order from tho
King ns Supromo Judge, setting nsido tho
jury until tho question whethor tho alleged
slander was i'i na slander, should bo tried
beforo nnd determined by tho judges.
Accordingly a number of witucsscs woro
examined ou oath " to answer fully such
questions now pending," etc. Some of tho
witnesses summoned rospectfully declined
to taico tins oath, nnu on motion ot .Mr.
Ricord were adjudged guilty of coutoinpt
of Court, nud imprisoned in tho Fort
which wns tho common lock-up in those
days. Among those who wcro thus com
mitted to duranco vilo in chargo of A. P.
Brickwood, Prefoctof Police, wereStephon
Reynolds, 15. 11. Boardman aud John G.
Muun. Dr. II. W. Wood also for refusing
the oath, was lined, the judgo stating lhal
it was ooly because his professional servicer

nnd Mr. Abell, then U. S. Conbul, made a
formal protest to Gov. Kekuauaoa, and
demanded redress for the injuries inflicted
upon his countrymen, Fortunately there
was uo American, war vessel hero at the
time, to make a ca'siti belli of tbo aflUir.
The result waa that Briusmade was denied
a jury trial, aud his claim wont to tho arbi.
