quecrty arranged society is the
"Forty.' 'I his is the nuiitlwr of its
member, encli forty jenrs old or ti-
wards, on admission. Its constitution
ttmvMn tlmt the Society shall exist
forty years, 'I he admission fee is for
ly ibtlnrs. lu ascinbly room is at
No (o. street, is forty feet square,
and is lighted at night by forty wa
antlles. The regular meeting is every
furticth night, and its secial meetings
nay bo held only on days of the month
iattly liiille by four or ten. Karri
ni:innl memlwr had a number assign
ill to him, and m all meetings and
matters of the Soi icty, is known only
l his mi mix: r. New mcmlers are
iIch ll to fill araiiies, all the members
i urn urring. 'I he by laws contain fort)
artu lc. 'P'c secrets of the Societ)
innot be disclosed, of course '1 he)
relate chietl) to mutual aid and com
furt, and there is nothing objectionable
m them on any ground, moral or jnilit
ii al. The officers are selected by lot.
The " Forties " are all of fair mental
K)wcr, education and exicricncc, and
include in due projwrtion business men,
professionals and men of leisure. Some
of their forty minute discussions hac
been singularly pointed, candid and in
structive. 'I he president states the
iULtion and the circumstances, or men
tal ro cs-cs that led up to it. I Ic then
inquires whether the Society will hear
four-minute, or ten-minute sccchcs
upon it. The former rule is usually
adopted when the subject is of a opu
lar character; the latter if the theme is
i rc serious or difficult. In either
rase a speaker may occupy double time,
ifw imitcd by the President. If no
one oluntccrs to speak, speakers may
be named from the chair. After the
debate, on the request of four mem
bers, the stews of the Society will be
taken on the question by a show of
hands. The present leader, call him
., is frank-, genial, off-hand, well to
do, and scry tiopular. He makes no
pretensions to scholarship, but has a
mint, original way of looking at things,
and of expressing hU mind.
On the first meeting in 'Si, A.,
as in duty bound, presented hU
question .-militated how it came up.
January ist, A. solus, indulging
m his usual morning res eric be
fore rising, hyuittr, "I wonder
if men generally arc really alike
'essentially and K)tentially,' as the
mental philosophy fellows call it?
Of course, there arc differences plain
ly enough. One strong, another sickly.
One well brought up and educated,
another neglected and illiterate. Ik,
plenty oC money. 12., none at all. IX,
has always good luck. O., the' Old
Harry's Own.' G., comes of good
blood, and U., out of the mire. F.,
hippy fellow I has a most charming
wife; but V., he caught a Tartar,' and
can't get away. M. is good looking,
and can talk like a steam engine. N.,
homely, and hasn't a word to say for
himself. 'All clear as mud.' Ilut if
we eliminate the accidental and un
essential,' as the big wigs hac it, how
then ? We all live by eating and sleep
ing. In a hundred years wc shall all
be dust. None of us can jump ten
feet high. Not one is as w isc as an
editor pretends to be, or can tell what
weather we shall hae next week, or
how long he is going to live, or what
he w ill see first after he dies. G. can
build a ship, but he can't make a tree.
U is a capital doctor, but he couldn't
make an egg that would hatch. That
fellow, what's his name, said he made
something like a louse in his laboratory,
but Tyndall said he didn't, that the
germ of the louse was floating in the
air, and got into the chemicals. When
it cornea lo creating anything, I reckon
we are all ' up a stump.' Ilut crhaps
there hac been smarter men in the
it, who could make living things. If
so, they haven't left us any account of
it. In fact, from what little I've read
in history, l think wc arc smarter and
ran do more than an) body that pre
ceded us. Ilut some good coplc
worked miracles some of the Jews.
Yes, but if tlicy did, it was through a
higher power, not their own. So they
themselves tell us. I guess, upon the
whole, u care 'all in the same boat.'
in fact, when I meet our fellows, some
how I am concious, I know, oir hand,
we arc all pretty much alike. And I
know too, that wc men arc ahead of
any other living Ixrings on earth, let
alone in animate things, that I've ever
fallen in with, or read about, A ticc
is bigger than I, but 1 can cut it down.
or root it up; so can any kanaka or
John Chinaman. A rock is heavier
and harder than I, but I can put in
some nitro-gl)ceriue and blow it to
smithereens, An elephant is no end
stronger, but I can stop him with a lit
tle shell The blubber hunters kill lots
of big whales every season. Yes, we're
certainly at the top, but wc can't make
an ant, or a spire of grass. And the
smartest man that ever lived couldn't
do.it. Neither could he make a man.
I Ic can pro-cieatc one but that ' a very
different thing. Hut there are plenty
of men in the world, twelve hundred
millions they say, and as to the num.
Ixir of anwiaU and trees and plants,
old Buclkl himself couldn't calculate
'eiH; But wlwc did tliey all conic
from at the ttit? Man didn't nuke
'fm. 'Vkey didn't make tbcRwelvtw,
If men, the tops.iwvtr
'cm, it stands to reason ,
I (.an i inarvc
that nothing Icm than man could do i
it. It must have !cen somebody
greater than man that did it. Hut
who? Angels? Wc don't know much
about 'em; they don't visit us much.
As to what they can do, or what they
cnn.t do, none of them have ever told
tis. As to fairies, elves and the like,
they'll do for children to dream about.
Ghosts never make anything make
your hair stand up, tcrhaK. Arch
angels are at the head of the list, I
Miposc, but we know very little in
deed about them The lliblc tlon't
ny they can create anj thing. We arc
not bound to believe they can, till wc
hear so on good authority. Let's
sec, it's nearly breakfast time, and I
can't go any further now, but at our
next meeting I'll take along let inc
cc a bit of stone ) cs, and ask our fel
low s how it came to be, and if it don't
require the existence of a Divine Crea
tor, to account for it?"
A. reproduced his morning thought
so naturally and pithily, that
the forty listened with in tercst,
and when he held up a piece of
white quartz, and propounded the
question with which he closed, he was
greeted with hearty cries of "'Ten!"
"Ten'" It remains to be explained
that applause in this Society is discrim
inating. Thus "Four" means appro
val, "Ten" strong approval, and
" Forty" enthusiastic assent.
