This ippo-ition comes ft om an innate tlcsircby
the masses for the perpetuity of Hawaiian in

of the present extravagant and reckless course
toward imperialism, striking the surest blow at
its life and interests, and ssealcning the state
almost beyond redemption. The fact that no
oxcrt act toward -eliding ourseUes of thlt in
cubus of despotism has taken phec, proses in
itself how desirous arc this people to ol)en e

mcnllim here. These facts nrc not the mere
insertion of sore-head jKililicians, but are
well known throughout the community, liotli
natise and foreign, and from I lawali In N'iihaii
mi well established, and so generally known
that even the mouthpiece nf the present minis
try, the '. C. .., has jet made no attempt lo
controvert them, lis attempts of late base
liecn neither lo discuss nor deny litem ; but
piinfully aware of its inability to defend them
before a people that has lost all confidence
in its utterances, it is slrcniinus in lis sain en
tleanirs lo lead Ihe attention from the real
question at issue. The burden of the com
plaint utlcrcii against the conduct of this gov
ernment at the "American dinner," and which
lias iK-eome a common topic of discussion in
our society, was not lint Americans and for
eigners had lieen excluded from holding public
offices, (although the tendency lo exclude them
has lately lieen manifested), but that govern
ment was muting tit itsomrts cf the country
in olyttts that art mtkit for Ihe gtncinl gml,
and which tend strongly to centralize "wwer
in any one estate of Ihe realm ; that the results
inevitable would lie, if allowced In go on un
checked, an increase of taxation and the s irlti.il
establishment of an alisolute monarchy.
Il matters not mht, riites, or who rereienl us
in the leg ithtii re, so long as useless extrava
gance is kept down, and the teniUncy of who
ever may occupy ihe Hawaiian throne lo exer
cise an autocratic sway, is held in proper Hisi
lion under the constitution and laws of the
country. It is neither an answer lo established
facts, nor an explanation of them, that "the
direct taxation of this Kingdom is less than
any other ci Hired country," so long as it is
plainly evident that good government and ra
tional economy would lessen them still more.
Anything is expensive that is not necessary.
High salaries in government arc not necessary;
large expenditures for palace finery is notneces
say; llic support of remote connections of the
King, especially such as may nev er c called
into the service of the country, is unnecessary;
"improved ordnance" is unnecessary; "foreign
official guests" lo witness alisurdities are in-
necessary; Coronations arc unnccccssary ; and
7iv Million Leans are unnecessary, excipt
to cancel the obligations incurred by govern
menl foolery. Hut netessilies will conic of the
iimieeeisaries, and ihey will le these; Toadies

come the ruling grnius of the liovernnu-ntj
autocracy will lie fostered; and hopless debt
will le greedy of the taxes it can extort from
an oveibuidenetl -icople. It remains to lie seen
lum far a spirit of fatalism persades this com
munity, and how long it wilt be content to
meet without a murmur and with senseless
a-iathy, whatsoever fate may le "willed by
Allah." Hut wc Inliesc the community is
awake to the danger of the situation, and will
comport itself accordingly. Le measures be

TUB TOST OFFICE AGAIN.
The action of the Postmaslcr-General, in re
quiring the earlier mailing of newspan;rs, has
caused no little comment, vVcwill lie char!
table enough to supMsc that the present force
in the Honolulu post office is overworked, and
that, the mailing of papers as eatly as txissible
is a necessity to suable them to give their at
tention to late, letters, which are always con
sidered of more importance than iacrs. Hut
even under these circumstances, there is no
reasonable excuse for Ihe new regulation. The
postil department Is not conducted for the
Kcial purpose of pay ing the P.M. G, a handsome
salary for nothing, and to make woiK as light as
sissible in his department, ll was Instituted,
and it is lo le supascd maintained, for the ac
