ANXIETY I OR THE SUM.
The arrival of your Jteamcr C. A, iiiirf
show how anxious all your good tscople must
have liccn alwut the Stus, many familic: must
have Iwcn sorely trlcil by her non-arrival, the
report of her departure on time, which reached
you by the 1'. M. S. S. Co.'s line must have
nggravateil your anilely, liul "as all's well
that ends cll," vvc must I thankful matters
arc no worse, though it seems a mistake to
allow a broken propeller to remain when a
duplicate could so easily le placed in position
in this pcut where all facilities for that purpose
arc at hand. A jour Marine Kailnay is now
completed you will not lc helpless hereafter,
Imt whether the Sun could hasc been handled
in your port is a question.
Itusiness men arc looking toward your
islands with a view to drumming up orders,
liut if your law imposing a) cat!)' tax of five
hundred dollars is enforced, the profits would
hardly warrant other additional expense, but
as its your country if you wish such a law for
self-protection, it is )our undoubted privilege
lo have it, but as the said law lias already lxxn
evaded I presume there arc ways and means of
circumventing it again.
THE OPIUM QUESTION,
Our Congress is getting interested on the
Opium question and placing a tax often (10)
dollars per $und upon the drug with the
specification that it must contain nine (9) per
cent of morphia, the theory being that the pre
paration of this grade for smoking purposes, is
too costly for any ordinary consumer, and will
largely decrease the sale. Some estimate that
the loss to this government alone by the entry
of low grade opium as against the high in
morphia is about $20,000 )er jear, but what
will the poor but honest chinaman do, who
sells the opium to shippers for I Ionolulu and
sells his consignees also? I wonder how many
seizures of opium would lie heard of if the
turtles who sell here did not tsost your authori
ties at the same time Aforrillizt as you may.
A chinaman who is a confined opium consumer
will hae it at w hates cr cost and if possible in
the face of all the custom house officers in
Christendom, but when it is a well-known fact
that oor American sons and daughters are ac
quiring the horrible death-dealing practice, it
is a matter which should interest every family
and all means should le adopted to prevent its
licing sold or received into the country,
The news from Ireland seems to show suc-
ces,f at last in the search for Phoenix Park
murderers, for when thieves and such fallout
honest men have a chance. The impression
seems to be that all L"uroic is in danger from
different forms of Pihilism of which the assassi
nation in Ireland seem a part, and now that
the Oar is promised a house-warming at his
coronation, it seems as though the murderous
revolutionary clement had awakened with re
newed activity, probably of all the sovereigns
Kalakaua is the only one vv ho has nothing 10
fear in the way of pin-nial violence, for my
part I can't sec why a King or a President his
not just as much right to his existence as any
other' of Gal's creatures, anil the traditional
divinity which hedges alout another bed of
roses on which royalty is supposed to recline,
must 4c relegated to old time history and fairy
tales, for in this nineteenth century w chase
none of it.
Wc are all interested now in preparations for
a scries of concerts by Theodore Thomas to
lie given in the Mechanics' Pavilion, and as
many of our wealthiest citizens have guaran
teed the ten thousand (10,000) dollars requited
as a deposit, the affair promises great pleasure
for all; prices, arc about what was arranged for
the sS'lllon concerts, say $100 for a box hold
ing seven (7) persons for six (6) performances
which promises reserved scats for each party at
say $2.50 per scat. Not so bad after all, but
tough on us poor folks, but then you know itii
jiccunkwity knows no law, and it no respecter
of persons. At our theatres, crowds arc the
order of the evening and also of the afternoon,
judging from the numbers seen at all places of
amusement. The only new play presented at
present is " Voting Mrs. Writhrop " at Ilald
win's, which licing styled the most (motional

11, Savers one of our prominent Front-street
merchants (now of the firm of C. I'.. Wliitncy

v isils you for a business and pleasure t rip. Asa
brother "workman" I bespeak a'goodly share
of your usual kind attention to strangers, nnd
trust he will lie a popular w ith ) ou as here,
where his pleasant face has been well known
for j cars.
1 Iawaiian Commercial seems to hold its own
on the stock hoard, but where is llccia? 1
trust V. 0. Smith was successful in arranging
some stock connections here, for, as I have
stated in a previous letter, the investment in
sugar stocks which have a tangible value and
dividends, as against stocks on tupcr with not
even a hole In the ground, can Inrdly be
spoken of by comparison, and can lay the in
difference to your securities to the big pond lie
tween investments and investor. Hut stocks
arc vcryiincerkiin. Our local water company,
Spring Valley, having for jcars paid regular
and satisfactory dividends, announced this
month the necessity of passing the same, per
haps for several months; which news, though
anticipated by the knowing ones, was a sad
statement for some whose income and sole sup
port comes from this source. The comparative
drought of this season has necessitated con
stant pumping, entailing great expense to the
conqvany, "hence these tear," which is the
reason given by ersons in authority.
Trusting the dissipation of your court and
rojalty has not been too much for the usual
quiet of jour town, I am yours,
THE NATIVE 'ESS.
One of the great imperfections in our politics
in this age of enlightenment in which wclive
is the lack of two distinct political parties, as
exist in the governments of Kngland, I'rnncc,
the United States and other countries.
Ifwc were to distinguish and indicate by
name the parties that really exist among us
now, the follow ing would perhaps lie the ap
propriate names for them, the bread-and-butter
(hoopilimcaai) party and the independent
The differentiation of two political parties in
our politics would result in one jvarty growing
stronger than another, w hile one party was in
control of affairs.
Hut these tw o parties should lie united in a
jealous devotion to the" good of the land of
their birth, the honor ofthcr ruler, and the
principles on w hidi the) are founded.
These two parties would lie constantly striv
ing at all the elections, and the side that was
victorious would lie in authority.
Seeing that wc at the present time are boasting
of our enlightenment, wc think it is time for
us to increase our wisdom to meet the demands
of the future, and wc beg of all thoughtful
people in the country to work on thi plan,
and to carry out this idea at the next election.
The writer of the above has not carefully
distinguished between cause and effect, and
docs not seem to lie informed as to the true
purpose and origin of a political parly.
A political party does not spring up in re
sponse to a call-or request, but it grows in ac
cordance w ith a natural law, as a result of a
social or political demand or necessity, as
from the necessity to resist an evil or to assert
and carry forward a richt or luincinlc.
The Coronation is now an accomplished
fact, and if this,- novel crformancc it to be
made a means of binding together the hearts
of the people it will have been of use.
It is perfectly certain that from the initiation
of the members, of this cabinet in the high seats
they occupy in our government to the present
time, the mind of the nation has not been
united in supporting thcin as fit for their posl
Therefore in order to calm and pacify the
agitated public mind, In the name of the
people, webeg that these men be removed
from their place without delay, that thus this
new ceremony may have its due effect, and the
pravcr of (he people from one end of the land
to the other may lie answered.
Let it please the King to give earnest heed
to this pra)cr, and lo appoint such men as arc
trusted at Itome and respected abroad. It is
unnecessary for us at this time to rehearse the
reasons for this K-lition, for the people through
out the length ami breadth of the land arc well
acquainted with the causes of the nation's com
plaint. It is not possible for the government lo
cleanse itself by merely stitching up the tat
tcral robe of this ministry. Wcare convinced,
ami so doubtless are the many wise and
thoughtful txrrsons, that It is well nich imiKnsl
blc to jvalcb up this ragged garment with new
cloth. In sirdcr then to meet the impose of
this petition let the whole cabinet be removed.
