now on llieie islnnds, anil have liegun their

heen irregularities, they ought to lie uncarthcil.
If there have been no irregularities, the worhl
ought lo know it. ll'thaps Ihe reason for
Il.1w.1ibn honesty, which will he most convinc
ing to New Vork sugar refiners, is that it would
not pay to rcship foreign sugar from these isl
ands. The logic of a "no profit" argument
is irrcsistalile to the mercantile mind, every
where. Hut other and worthier reasons ought
tn have weight; with )he American statesmen
who have this reciprocity question under con
sideration, ami who chiefly must be guided by
the light aflimlctl by the reiort which the
special commissioners now- in our midst must
soon make. Trusting in the intelligence ami
integrity of the commission, as the reputation
its 'mcml-cis bring m-U.es it natural they
should, the planters and shippers may rest
their cause, confident that the essential facts
for which they have all along contended must
be brought out by llic report made, and by the
discussion it will provoke. It is not lo lie ex
pected that the commission of inquiry as ill do
more than rc(iort upon the question of alleged
fraudulent exportation of sugars from this coun

so sweeping a vindication, that the incident

Some showmen and others who have to do
with arranging public entertainments arc too
apt to look exclusively to their own benefit or
that of the party or society they represent, re
gardless of the public convenience and the in
dividual rights of such as form the audiences,
antl who collectively contribute the largest
share ol Ihe money by which such things are
supported. Wc do not blame those who un
dertake the conduct of a public show, or pay
ing entertainment, for being sharp in their
collections of established fees ; but as fees are
paid liy the individuals of an audience for
some special privilege, over and alwve what is
accorded to those who pay none, these eisons
naturally expect to be allowed lo enjoy that for
which they pay. If, in a public entertainment,
they pay for a scat, they naturally expect to
get what they I lave (raid for, and it is scarcely
less than a fraud upon the part of any manage
ment to sell tickets for more seats Ihan it can
supply. On the last Kamehamcha Day, tickets
were sold for seats in the grand stand for an
audience nearly twice as large as it could pos
sibly accommodate, and there was neither tilling
room nor shelter for many who had (laid their
dollar. Worse than this, when ihcsjvorts had
so far advanced as to render any further appli
cation for tickets iinprnliablc, . the outside
crowd, wlm had pai I nothing, were allowed to
llock in ami further block out Ihe view of the
pasjng audience. Tliis was also llie case with
admissions lit the track. Those who first went
on had lo pay a fee of $5, while, a little later
on, those who had paid nothing were allowed
the Mine privilege. Ills tjuitc evident (hat
llie grand stand needs enlarging twice its
present siic, and if those who have to do wilh
the park management will see lo it (hat this is
done, and that the reasonable objection) which
we have felt in duty Iwund to make are pro

section .17, however, where the appeal court is
empowered at lis own option lo cause the ex
clusion or withdrawal of "all or any rsoiu
whomsoever" from it meetings. If rigidly
exercised such a provision could be made to
exclude cscn an appelant himself. Section 50
of Ihe act says; " The decision of llic couit
(meaning the appeal board) or of a majority of
llic members thereof shall be final and conclu
sive." We doubt if such a provision is con-
lilutiim.il. This provision will lc rather
severe on aspirants for collcctorships: "Such
lax collectors, before entering upon the dis
charge of their respective duties, shall sever
ally file with the governor, a bond lo the
minister of finance, conditioned for the faithful
performance of their duties accortling lo law,
with two sureties, to lie approved by said min
ister of finance, in a penal sum equal It) the
amount of taxes to lie collected," &c. Under
this provision the collector for this district will
lie neccssitalcd to give lionds to the amount of
aliout $140,000. The act, however, is too
lengthy lo consider it fully in detail; but it
should be carefully icruscd by such as have
taxable properly, and especially m by those
living in the out districts.

The following letter, addressed to the
'Dear
Editor," is cheerfully accorded space ; ,
Is it not too bad that the tapers make so
much fuss aliout Mr. Gibsons praising him
self? I know that the llible savs. "let an
other man praise thee and not thine own
moutn. 1 believe in the inuieas muchas any
stances. It clearly aCmits that praise is neces
sary, nnd means that it is better to leave the
praise that one is entitled tu, lo other men io
give, but when the other men fail to do their
duly, what shall be done? Shall a man go en
tirely ssilhout necessary praise simply because
Ixxly, Imt it has to be taken accortling tocircum
his fellow- men withhold it? Ity no means!
The llible quotation I have made tloes not, I
ant sure, apply to circumstances like these.
Now, Mr. Gibson has civen others a treat deal
of opportunity of praising him, but they have
not appreciated ihcir opportunities, noixxiy
has praised him ; and so lie has had to do it
himself, and I think he's licht. And I think.
loo, that it's very important that he should do
so. There is danger that a great many of his
acts and deeds for the good of this people and
government would lie unnoticed and forgotten
unless tho attention of the public is called to
them from lime to time; and who con do this
so clearly and nicely as Mr, Gibson himself, in
his own paticr? This is a lard world, and
good men like Mr. Gibson are often unap
preciated by Ihe public, and a little skillful
f liaise, now' and then, goes a great ways, and
las a tendency to break down Ihe indilTeienee
and opposition of the mass of the community,

Kihtok Saturday Press J5i: The arti

confidence, If found in llic columns of a paper
whose proprietor nnd responsible editor was
ever known lo achieve a nearer approach ta
the angels than the assumption of saintly
sanctity and the pc of a Polynesian prophet-
In the abstract, the article in question it
aliove cavil or criticism, but having fur its

The present writer much feais tlie tlTcctuivon

pious eacc ami i.toiul amity.
Tothu.se familiar wilh tlie thcckercl career
