Woman has a right to be proud of
the recent iccord of her sex. Vet
since Mary Sommerville there has been
no woman whose mind has stood the
test of a prolonged and trying strain so
well as that of Mrs. Washington Hoed
ling, the wife of the great engineer who
was entrusted with the construction of

engineering staff ever since her hus

abled, and could not proceed with his

study engineering, and her success was

to take her husliand's place, and the
enormous stricture which Americans

make the experiment.
A merchant has called the writer's
attention to the practice obtaining
among masters of merchantmen, who
visit this iiort occasionally of bringing
down goods on their own account, which
arc sold at auction to the prejudice of
