of the stock of the Interistand Steam

On the same day 75 was the highest

Woman has a right to be proud of
the recent iccord of her sex. Vet
since Mary Sommerville there has been
no woman whose mind has stood the
test of a prolonged and trying strain so
well as that of Mrs. Washington Hoed
ling, the wife of the great engineer who
was entrusted with the construction of
the Ilrooklyn bridge, who has (says the
Tall Mall Oarctte) been chief of the
engineering staff ever since her hus
band first fell ill. When he was dis
abled, and could not proceed with his
great work, Mrs. Uoebling began to
study engineering, and her success was
such that in a short time she was able
to take her husliand's place, and the
enormous stricture which Americans
not incorrectly call "one of the most
conspicuous marvels of the nineteenth
century " was completed under her di
rections. The honour of being the first
to drive across the new bridge was well
earned by Mrs. Uoebling, and the
peculiar share which she had taken in
its construction was rightly held to just
ify a disregard of the old superstition
which dooms to ill luck the structure
over which a woman has been the first
to cross.
There is ample room in this kingdom

Ivvcry wise man knows that there is op
poitiiniiy on all the islands for agricul
tural experiments that have the verdict
of experience in their favor. Unfor
tunately, most of these experiments
are of slow growth and the result, in
dollars and cents, is a long way off.
The more direct results of cam. plant
ing, rice growing and banana culture
have driven neatly everything else out
of the field, Hut Kona coffee is too
excellent an article to have so small an
island yield. We think it might be
raised near Honolulu, in connection
with lianana culture. We wish some
one owning land in any one of the
many valleys of the vicinage would
make the experiment.
A merchant has called the writer's
attention to the practice obtaining
among masters of merchantmen, who
visit this iiort occasionally of bringing
down goods on their own account, which
arc sold at auction to the prejudice of

in the habit of bringing hay and grain
here and selling that, also to the injur

a slight change in her present fonn will
enable her lo sink the largest frigates
with n single cfTotl, simply by (hopping
the driving-weight from n suitable
height on to the deck of the opposing
craft. It has been definitely decided
to make a torpedo boat out nf the

theorelii-'illy shown that the machinery
of Ibis cralt ofieis peculiar facilities for
discharging a torpedo either under or
over any hostile craft lhal should have
the hardihood to engage her. These
two last mentioned vessels are to be
plated with rails from the llereiauia

being expressly nl iiiltrim, and when
hostilities aie over and Hawaii has
vindicated herself on the high seas the
rails will be returned lo lleretania

operated as before. With these pie
paiations our government may calmly
and confidently await the shock of
arms, if the foreign powers are so
short-sighted as to provoke the slumber
ing spirit of a small but warlike people.

If the minister of the interior had nuthoiity

that Idler and the defendant's reply to it con
