The DetnKer Milymtne., ete,
Tlie Overland for Octolicr licpins Its prom
lucil toiy of Sin I'randsco rich society A
She phcril at Court. One thing it certain. 'I he
writer, Iw it man or woman, Imsa most m.istu
line pen. There are bin in lite second chapter
of the first Installment th.it rcminil one of
"The N'ewcnmes." The "new rieli" of Sun
I'nncloco were never morecrucllyplintngraplicil
than in the follow inp fragment of description
never more cruelly, became never more ac
curately. They found a vacant niche, and, after bring
Inq hit Charge a plate of mlad, fiurncy Morel
holding a giaw ot cliampnene that the hail
carelemly rejecteil anil trying to iklrnil ln.-r
from the rmtiulls of Inwltss raltlers. 1I
glanced euriounly arimnil. It was not a mw
anorama to him, hut It imprmcil hlin more
oreihly lint then Iwcaiite he had litcn so long
out (J the world.
A giKnl many dowager had secured eats
and cttahlhhed a sort of sutler's camp in the
midst of the fight, keeping half a ilnrcn young
orderlies hard at work and commenting on the
various dishes with engaging frankness. I'roni
the upper end of the room the scene was
spirited, even If it laded the "fairy-like
splendor" ascribed to it bv nest morning's
papers. The clatter of the iflslics, the popping
of champignc corks, the clamor of voices,
nude a confusion of longnartri.it would hae
put llabel to shame. 'I he black coats of gen
tlemen and gentlemanly Mailers struggled
frantically amidst a billowy expanse of ralnlmw
tlnleil dresses to attack the miniature fortresses
nnd flag-ships of Imned turkey and ice-cream.
Kvidently time was precious. An eager
young gentleman, bent on securing some
coveted illh for his bright particular star, ran
his foot through the lace flounce of one dress
and spilled a fjlass of wine ocr another, re
pairing the Injury with a careless "beg pan
don." Through an open doorway Ciimcy saw
in the punch room a bejy of sweet youths,
cramming their ickcts with cigars anil reiv
ing their drooping spirits with something
stronger than champagne.
"Why arc such creatures invited to respecta
ble houses?" muttered Curney, half to him
self. "Itccamc wc h.ne axes to grind," said a
voice at his clliow , "This js a pretty
scene isn't it ?"
"Very," he answered dryly. "I wonder
from what our modern system of entertain
ment was (leihcil. A man pi)s four or five
thousand dollars for the priiiligc of lending
his house for one evening to a crowd of ill
mannered, ovcr.dresscd people, a good third of
whom he doesn't know. I, for one, should
never want to occupy n home nfler such a rab
ble had Inxailt.il it.
"Ill-mannered I mcr-drusscd I Do )ou
know that )ou arc talking high treason ? "
There promises to lie much more of kindred
"treason ' in the story. And San Kranciscn
rich society is doubtless already wincing under
the litli. Fortunately, all San Franciscan
society It not xulgirly rich. It is to be trusted
that a scry small portion of Honolulu society
will ccn become so. Lazy Letters from Iow
Latitudes, by Charles Warren Stoddard is the
feature of the October number to which most
Ilunotiilan readers will soonest turn. They
are surcharged with the very atmos
phere of the tropics, heavy with its languor
and brilliant with its bloom. If more of us
hail the poetic insight into outward beauty
that Charley Stoddard so pre-eminently lias,
and more time for its exercise, would it bc4ict
ter or worse for us? Doubtless most readers
will say better, though not a few of those in
Honolulu will wish thatt in the present in
stance, our poet's vision might have ringed
more freely beyond an horizon of cigarettes,
champagne and hulas.
An engraving by G. Kruill, after C.ilbcrl
Stuart's familiar portrait of Washington, is the
frontispiece of Harpers' for October. It pre
cedes a xivitl sketch by John T. Ileadlcy of
The Iist Days of Washington's Aimy at New
burg, to which arc graphic illustrations by
Harry l'cnn, Howard 1'ile, C. A. Vandcrhoff,
C. Graham and J. L. .Morton. The Dawning
of Independence', by Thomas Wcntworth Hip;,
giuson, is also finely illustrated, with portraits
of Paul Kcxcrc, (as an old man), Dr. Joseph
Warren, General William Heath, Samuel
Adams and John Dickinson, and pictures of
the Lexington Green skirmish and of Sergeant
Jaspar at Kort Moultrie. The end and the
beginning of the war for American independ '
ence are old in those two articles and well
told. As a wliolc, the numlitr is a good one.
