asking now is, "What caused thegrccn light?"
The succession of colors which I hasc men
tioned, -occuiing exactly in ihe onlcr of Ihe
solar spectrum, would seem lo indicate lieyond
a doubt the presence of some highly refracting
substance In the atmosphere, which icsuhed
the tun' rays into primary colors nnd gave us
in Micccvdon, acconlmg to the angle of the
sun tij Ihe horizon, blue, green, yellow, orange,
and red, the two latter onl) appearing as re
flected from the under surficc of the haze. On
the c tiling of Ihe 13th, ihe sun appeared to
J perfectly clear, but after it was below the
horuon Ihe western sky was seen to lie cov
ered withn smoky hare of a singuhr appear
ance, which liecamc brilliantly illuminated with
cllow, orange, and red in the order I liasc
mentioned, counting uiiwanl from the horizon.

The air itself has refracting power, and so base
the minute particles of moisture or ice which
constitute llic ordinary hazy clouds in the
upper regions of the atmosphere ; but it would
WdilTicult to say why the effects which I Ime
described should not be of more frequent oc
currence irpioduccd by cither or Ixjth of these
causes, since they arc nlwuys present in a
greater or less degree, and especially as there
was .apparently nothing unusual in the klalc or
the weather at the lime. Ncitliet would
clouds of smoke alone produce such effects as

United State, wheresast tracts of prairie, and
often of wothjland, are burned over cstry
autumn, a smoky haze is a common thing al
that season of the year. Sometimes for two
days together the hue is so dense as lo almost
