AlliACllve, Ate, of course, the main source
whence arc ilcrlvcil the extraordinary force
which nrc threatening lo font roolulloniic the
mechanical worlil.
The properties Just ilescril'ol, however, Arc
hy no means (he only one which renilcr elec
tricity so especially useful At the present il.iy.
As the Icarneil doctor remarks: Klccttlclly
is the form of energy best sultcil forlransnils.ion
of aii clfect from one place lo Another. Were
not tills the cue. a battery oritynamo-maclilne
nl(;lil be titlllioil somewhat as a steam engine,
A water-wheel, or .1 windmill, but Its opera
tion would be necessarily I0c.1l, or only be
capable of conveying force to n distance by
means At once costly and Inefficacious, Nor
is the fact that the electric fluid Is Ihuscapablc
of being easily transmitted by any means Its
most remarkable property. A properly con
structed main will conduct water or air under
pressure, to that the force generated In the one
place may be rendered available at a distance
of many miles, but bold air and water so em
ployed arc sluggish in their movements,- while
so much friction necessarily results that only a
small ipiantity ofthe original energy Is available
for any practical purposes. On the other hand,
the velocity of the electric discharge approaches,
if it does not cental, that of light Itself. Then,
again, it passes readily through certain sub
stancesthe metals but will not be con
ducted byaoxtdisrd sulistances, glass or gums.
It is therefore easy lo confine the electric
current within bonds, as well as to transmit it
through very narrow channels of immense
length. As an Illustration, the Atlantic cable
may be given. It consists of a copper wire,
Or strand of wires, sonic c,ooo miles in length.
The electricity Is confined within the cable
by a thin coating of gutta pcrcha. The result
is this, that the current to be transmitted pre
fers to proceed to America ami return, by
means of the earth, by the good conductor,
rather than force its way through the bad con.
ductor, and return to the generating battery by
a journey of a fpw feet or inches. Ily an im
proved arrangement the alternating currents
employed to work long submarine cables do
mt actually complete the circuit, but arc sub
merged in a condenser at the receiving station
aficr having produced their exceedingly slight
but certain effect upon the receiving instrument,
the beautiful syphon recorder of Sir William
Thompson. "So perfect is the channel, and
so precise the action, of both the transmitting
and receiving instruments employed, that two
systems of electric signals may be passed sim
ultaneously through the same cable in opposite
directions, producing independent records at
eilher end,"
With respect to the progress made by the
development of the telephone, some wondrous
things may lie stated, and possibly more wond
rous stillcxpcctud. The clictric currents caused
b) the vibrations of a diaphragm acted upon by
thc human voice naturally vary In frequency
and intcnsity.according to the number and de
gree of these vibrations, and each motor cur
rent in exciting the electro-magnet forming part
of the receiving instrument deflects the Iron
diaphram,occupyingthepositIonofan armature
to a greater or smaller extent, according to its
tienttri. So delicate are the workings of this
instilment that the detail ofwholcchoruses per
formed at the Grand Opera in Paris are now
distinctly hcarn by an audience which may lie
many miles away.
Some difficulty has arisen regarding the
working ofthe telephone, owing to the extreme
delicacy of the currents generated. The in
HtruuiciiU mstl are oltcn by far too sensitive.
The wires employed arc in the habit of
caching up portions of currents that may be
transmitting signals along other wires, so that
signals received arc occasionally of a rather
poly glot character. The objection, however,
seems to have been at last got rid of by certain
arrangements adopted by Mr. Jacob. This
will be a great point to be achieved, since the
wires oi the telephonic system may be arranged
in cable fashion, as has long been the case with
respect to those of the telegraph.
Regarding the transmission of owcr to a
distance, it is urged that the electric current,
u before hinted at, has successfully entered the
lists Against compressed air, the hvdraulic ac
cumulator, and the quickly running rope. With
electricity properly transmitted the actual loss
uf puwer over moderate distances is said to be
only 10 per cent., as against some jo or Co per
cent, of the other methods named. Another
advantage, too, In favur of the use of the dec
ide currents is found in the fact that the wires
usril arc Immensely less weighty than would
be the pipes or ropes employed in causing out
the rival systems.
Working electric railways is as yet in
embryo; but if it s potibIc lo successfully
impait force to an electric locomotive by
simply sending currents through the rails of the
permanent way, a wondciful advantage will lie
gained. The weight of the engine will be
wonderfully lessened, no transport of cither
fuel or water will be required, while there will
be no danger of accidir.U from boiler exp
losions, at any rale on the track itself, The
forces of nature, too, ate now likely to be
everywhere utilised. The hunlcanc, the rain
fall, the cataract, wilt be pressed into service,
and made to drive our machines, light our
cities and heat our furnaces and dwellings.
