The Hawaiian Monthly was first out this
month. It contains one nrticle of distinctly
Hawaiian llavor The Overthrow of the An
cient Tabu System in Ihe Hawaiian Islands.
The paper is written by Prof. W. I). Alexan
der and is n clear concise and spirited account
of an important episode in the brief story of
Hawaiian history Doctor Kodgcrs writet
aliout The German Theory of Communicable
Diseases. The paper bears evidence ofcare in
Its preparation. It is for scientific physicians
lo criticise the soundness of its argument and
the accuracy of its statements of fact. Il Is
enough for Ihe critic of magazine literature
lhat it is well written. Some graceful lines
dedicated to the little princess Kaiulani, and
published by ropiest of the laic Miss Harriet,
arc a long step in advance of the verse usually
met with in the magazine. Mrs. Wyman's
serial story draws to a close, increasing
in Interest with Ihe later chapters. It will
be finished next month. The Cra,fish is a re
print story of rare merit. The fact lhat the
late Eduoard I.aboul.iyc has given it Ihe origi
nal setllngof delightful style insures its interest.
The Editorial Comment is, as always, good
reading.
With Ihe Planters' Monthly for April is sent

porary publications the world over. There
seem to be few voices of dissent lo Ihe proiiO'
sition that (he indiscriminate, denuding of for'
estt must result In the impoverishment of con
tiguous areas. Lumber men and stock raisers.
however, think differently. The great gospel
of selfishness is their prayer-book and lightning
calculator, all in one. To resist these vandals
many of whom are estimable gentlemen and
good citizens, apart from "business" is the
fight the lest of the people of the world have
on their hands to-day. The writer in the
Planters' Monthly has fairly outlined the
gravity of Ihe situation in the United States
and on these islands; and it is lo be hoped that
Hie planters, to whom it Is directly addressed,
will try and Inlhience legislation to the end

his honor of Ihe Michigan bench seems con
clusive ; and as their is no resistance on ihe
part of the prisoners, I sentence them to four
days' hard reading of the Hawaiian Gazette,
with the assistance of the latest edition of
some good lexicon say Webster. As for Ihe
complaining witness, I advise him to quit the
shades of private life and join the staff of the
Pacific Commercial Advertiser, where, in due
course, he may attain 4I1C hide of a pachyderm,
the nerves of n sponge, and the intelligence of
a tumble bug."
