JUMR, ill
(Concltnltrl from fine pr )
m? (If thh h n practical Idea Mr
litlitor, ptaitc remember me in the roy
lfy of jrour Mtent ')
.soss A long strip of lwnc.li lies before
m, smooth nd firm but not white,
ai Mir Bird's grosvitig ' makes it,
Ism sorry to r there is no white
cowl in thh Jfitty floor, but only the
ltttvcritcd lons of Ma mm Kt, lava
rock in feet, worn by rssins ami vrava
ml jfurkling liVe anthracite in the
slMpr)'.
To day the bench is unusually clear
ofrtibbun, though the high tide marl
shows a contmnuu. line of debris, and
hen and there still remain a few piles
of drift-wood, and tags- of course peb
W at evidences of the great freshet
in October. That was a storm that
"irlipl ell add to the reputation of Hilo.
alreidf somewhat famous for its water
supply. Old residents said such a
storm had not been known for forty
year Dawn the mountain side poured
the tumultuous torrents, filling escry
edkh to ovcrnWimr and snecping
out into the bay whole plantations of
rich soil that reddened the sea for many
miles. Ilridgcs supposed safely up out
of harm's way were snapped like spiders
threads and tossed into the seething
flood. Alwve the roar of the sea escn,
sounded the roar of the Wailuku Riser,
and hundreds of cords of forest tun
cr were torn from their roots and
iejinmiuiouslv hurried on their perilous
voyage, caught at last in the arms of the
emit nit sen and thrown in wild gambol
upon the shore. Heritor days after
ards the natives thronged, piling up
'the scattered driftwood until the beach
looked like a prosjcrous wood yard,
and collecting in heaps the unusual
deposit of lobbies which by and by
wojld make an honest penny pasing in
door ways and garden paths
Such a storm changes in no small de
gree the outline of the coast, and one
can easily sec vshat power lies in water,
cscn in quietly running streams to un
dermine and build ut, until the old
landmarks quite disappear. Herein
a few hours ss-as thrown out from the
mouth of the Wailuku riser, a new-point
ofland th.itin one placequite reached the
reef and in another so encroached uon
the wharf that for a longtime boats could
- not come to their accustomed landing.
What a life there is in inanimate
things ! How, when we think of it, the
Whole globe is pulsing in a fever of its
"own 1 Dovsn in the depths of the earth,
the attrition of mighty rocks is feeding
the fires which csxr and anon
burst from their hidden lairs, and
stream up red into the sky. From
mountain tops, those magnificent rcs
crsoirs the clouds, through invisible
pipes drass- silently from the sea and
river their accumulated supplies, which
in their turn drop down to feed the
realms below. Kocks, like trees, grow
and waste away, lands arc submerged
and lakes become dry ground. We
plant and reap where once seas rolled
their floods. I'rof. Proctor tells us that
this life of the inanimate globe is as
necessary as the more evident life of
nature, nor can it cease till our earth
like the moon becomes a dead world,
without atmosphere, sound or motion,
silent and ghostly in the universe.
It is easy to imagine myself to-day
the sole jwssessor of the enchanting
scene spread out before me. I seem
to be the only occupant of the region,
even my funny crab neighbors have de
serted me asleep perhaps, though the
swift movements have on element of
sleeplessness in them. That gnarled
stump at my left, partly imbedded in
"the sand, and bristling with long black
sea-weed looks -ery like a drowned
native with long black hair matted in
the sand but I know it is not.
Out in the bay are numerous canoes
of fishermen, and there in the oiling is
the pretty packet Emma Claudina,
which on the morTovv willlift and spread
white sails and disappear in that long
tangle of grey mist that lies against the
horizon. My ship, is it not ? which
will lift that misty curtain for me and
speeding jo)lully will carry inc on and
on, till once more appears the dear
home land, the Golden Gate that in
its turn will open on silent hinges for
one to jiass through, greeting once
more the loved faces and long separated
forms. That far native land how to
us all i is always home, its fruits a
Ifttle'morc savory, its flowers a little
brighter, the winter skies and summer
heats even precious to us, as the re
proofs and counsels of a friend whom
sve lose. We never gis-c to any adopt
ed country the loyalty of this our first
mother, and someday ses, certainly
we arc going lock if"only to lay our
selves upon her losing breast, to sleep
herc.thc pine trees sigh and white
snows spread their sort coverlet.
What tears ? and all for that toss
ing boat, thnt out reaching sea, that dim
horizon line 1 Lift up our eyes and
sec what nature can do in .the midst
vf her tears. That rainbow- arch, is it
not glorious ? that now with one foot
on the sea and one on the land she
.- stands .-ill radiant, the growth of a mo-
"merit, the very' emblem of heavenly
beauty and joy. Above it the broken
clouds reveal untold depths of azure,
and Ic1ovy, framed in the gorgeous set
ting, rests the pretty village of Waiakea,
amid groves of serdure, green as an
emerald. This picture U mine, and I
have the surety that even Mr. Fur
neaux, with his dainty brush, could not
rival it. No one will dispute with me
my jiosscssion, I can take it home with
me, and there on the walls of memory
safe, I. can turn to it any hour, and en
joy its richness of color and sweet help
fulness of suggestion. Yes, for over
the cloud of all our sorrows, God's rainbow-
of lose does surely hold itself, and
auurcdly sacrifice and trial can be
nude pathways to the brightest azure
of God's presence.
Now- at last I must go back, reluc
tantly howeser, turning again and again
to have another view of my beautiful
- picture framed in its raintow setting,
the tiny huts in the emerald grove, and
.the slender canoes drawn up along the
shore. M. C K.
