donna of old Spain and there, up the principle and di
slope of Russian Hill, the more fashion- u smacks of tl
nhlc votaries of the altar tell their
heads,
l-rom the conglomeration of races at
the corner of Dupont and Pacific
streets the Spanish, or rather Mexican,
element withdraws into an atmosphere
of its own. It is one of the outskirts
of Chinatown, and upon the outskirts
of everything Califomian the llclrrcw
juukshnp thrives. One passes from
paganism through Judaism to unadul
terated Catholicism in the space of a
single block.
On Ilroadw-.iy, between Dupont and
Kearney streets, stands the City Prison,
where so many who hate deserved
lianemu Imc escaped tlic noose;
near Dupont street is all that is left of
the once famous I cliama I louse, cele
brated by John Phccniv, "Smubob,
the lamented Derby; a cut of the
building, as it was originally, enriches
the pages of the "Annals of San I'ran
cisco"; all that remains, is the corner
portion, and this, having been dragged
from its former site in what was once
the center of the city, is now deposited
under a cliff of Telegraph Hill, and is
known as the Rock House. A stone
loosened in the block above it. might
easily crush through its roof, and, in
deed; the wonder is that the old shell
has not burst apart with the weight of
tradition that rests upon it.
There arc old wooden tenements in
the Spanish quarters with long, narrow
balconies, and multitudes of small win
dows : there are queer chambers jum
bled together iion the flat roofs of
imiKimgs or suits upon wic suit in uic
angular shoulders of the bill that over
shadows the Spanish quarters; there
are wmc shops below the basement, out
of which ooes a rank odor of wine, as
from a wine-press newly trodden ; there
is a superabundance of fiery pepper
pods, great ropes of them swinging
IIUII'IU III hill. 3WII3lll.il. ... tllt. liui'ivia
doorways; there are narrow alleys, dark
passages and slimy ones, some of them
where the paupers congregate; there
arc withered old hags sitting on dingy
stairways toasting their lean fingers over
pots of smouldering coals, and wither
ing young ones with the paint an inch
deep upon their faces as they sit in the
open windows and stare sharply at the
passers-by ; there are indolent youths
lounging at the corners rolling cigarettes
the whole afternoon, and at night they
drink and dance in the dance cellars
close at hand, and sometimes ply the
stiletto with fatal effect : there is much
gossip on the street, and most of the
pretty gossips arc coquettish!)' attired
in short skirts with n deep flounce at
the hem, while over their heads, con
cealinu half the face, they wear silk
shawls richly embroidered in colors and
with fringes half-a-yard long ; there are
exquisite brown babies with enormous
eyes as black as sloes and almond
shaped, the lashes shading them like a
twilight ; and there are smells, very
wonderful smells, in that Spanish
quarter of San Francisco !
It is there that some of the old cus
toms arc still observed in a small
compass bounded by Pacific, Green,
Kearney and Stockton streets, where
penny trumpets arc tooted or, rather
are shaken noiscly on the feast of the
Epiphany when the magi discovered
the holy child in the manger ; and at
I.astcr, eggshells loaded with flour arc
showered upon the frequenter of the
quarter; and carnival, cscciaiiy tne
latter days of it, are riotous; but Lent
is dull enough with its women in
mourning and its men stricken with
remorse against the approaching as
tion week.
Three of us wandered through the
Spanish tUancr one day, feeling like
strangers in a strange land ; only to
read the mines of the shopkeepers was
like running the eye down a page of an
opera libretto ; it seemed to us that the
whole street might easily be set to
music and without hcring the direc
tory for the sake of rhythm or euphony.
We were stared at, for we tetraycd
an uncommon interest in everything,
but we were treated with politeness or
reserve, and when at last wc came to
the coffee house of San Juan Capis
trano de Luna and were welcomed
by the little swarthy man with the,
twinkling eyes and the soil low voice,
who bore that majestic name, we
seated ourselves at one of his diminu
tive tables in his diminutive eating
room, which was in the rear of one of
the smallest shops in the world - we
were at once quite happy, for he
ordered our dinner through a hole
lush up in the wall through which we
saw that the kitchen was on the grade
above us, and the cook seemed to te

An honorable rivalry in business is to So nk.nu.u.
be commended, but dishonorable
methods to secure patronage should
merit prompt rebuke. It is natural
that compi'tiiion should exist, but it
does nut follow that it should be of a
base character, To sell certain articles
below cost to bait the public, and then
place extra values on othermcrchaudisc
to make up the difference, is an unfair
method which ought not he established.
It is a species of deception, mean in
and disreputable in practice.
ic mock-auction plan,
and is akin to the sawdust .swindle It
holds out to the unwary the promise of
great bargains, which is not fulfilled if
their purchases extend beyond the few
articles .sold under value as an advertis
ing dodge.
If consumers would exercise a little
common sense they would know that a
merchant cannot thrive who professes
to sell bis wares below their cost. If
this is bis rule of business, it lasts but
a brief period; a crpsh follows, and
honest creditors arc swindled out of
their money. It is a well-established
fact that the merchant who makes a fair
profit on every article he places on sale
can afford to sell his goods cheaper
than the one who offers a portion of
his goods below cost and then puts an
additional profit on the remainder.
Selling articles at ten tier cent, below
their value, and, to equalize profit,
placing thirty per cent, extra on others,
is a species of business rivalry that is
injurious to regular trade in any com
munity. It is a merchant's duty to
realize a reasonable advance on every
article he sells, as it is only in this way
that he can expect to succeed and pay
bis obligations. This, of course docs
not apply to styles that arc out of sea
son, or to stock on hand that may be
more or less unsalable, the distribution
of which can only be made to pay
through small concessions from the
regular prices.
The rivalry in the retail trade is more
active than in the wholesale, and the
practice of selling below cost is, there
fore, more general. There is less ex
cuse also for this course to be pursued
among jobbers, as they arc generally
men trained to business, having long
experience in mercantile affairs, and
are not ignorant of the sound methods
of dealing. An open, fair competition
is always healthy, as it is certain to
break up monopolies, and has the
futhcr effect of placing a reasonable
and proper value on commodities. An
honest, legitimate management of busi
ness is the only sure way to permanent
success, and money earned through
straightforward methods generally stays
with its possessors. U. .9. Economist.

nuity almost accidentally brought him
into notice and lucrative employment
Few who enjoy the warmth of the steam
pities and radiators in their houses, and
the light of the gas lamps in our city
streets, or admire the magical working
of the pcmimatic cash tubes in the large
city stores, Know mat the original in
ventor or these three wonderful con
venience of civilization was William
Murdoch, the boy who made (he
wqpden hat.
Murdoch was an inventive fellow
from an early age, resembling our own
Thomas Kdison in the fertility and ac
tivity of his genius.
I lis experiments in chemistry were
performed after working hours, and
being driven with orders and almost
constantly on duty as a machinist, he
was a middlv-aued nun before his ex
animation of different fuel vapors led
him to the discovery of the excellent
burning properties of coal ga. He
kept on distilling and combining until
he had proved his discovery; then he
described it in a paper to the Royal
Society, and received the large Rumford
gold medal.
That was all he got for his invention,
for he never ptentcd it. Had he done
so he ipight have been immediately rich
for though the common oeojlc rt'uni
out against the danger of fircpijies, and
members of Parliament scouted the idea
of a light without a wick, and
Sir Walter Scott had his joke at
"illuminatinc London with smoke,"
and even Sir Humphrey Davy ridieukd
the new discovery as imposVible, he
lived to see gas used everywhere, in
streets, shops, factories, and private
dwellings.
An anecdote in connection with this
invention, showinit how ready in exie-
dicnts Murdoch. was. While in Manches-
ler engaged in puttingupasteamenginc,
he ras invited, with Willatn Fairtuirn
to, J'mc at Mcdlock Hank, then at some
distance from the lighted tart of the
(own. It was a dark winter night, and
how to reach (he house over (he bad
roads was a puzzle to bis companion;
but Murdoch went, and after a little
delay got a bladder filled with gas, and
placing it under his arm like a bag-pipe,
discharged through (he steam of an old
tobacco pipe a (rcam of im, which
enabled them to walk to their datamation
