27. The oil steamer Rosecrans,
loading oil here this afternoon, caught
fire from her cargo and in a blaze
was cut adrift from her wharf, and
allowed to float out into the stream,
where she Bank. The crew escaped
by swimming. Several were slightly
burned.

Hanawaki Supervisor Kruger Tuesday
afternoon. vMayor Fern came into my
place of. business to confine himself
exclusively to business. We did not
talk politics. I wish to deny the
statement that appeared in the paper."
When asked if It were true that he
intended to withdraw from his con
test for delegate to the convention in
his precinct, Mr.- Kruger responded.
"My dear sir, I shall have to decline
to commit myself. That is a subject
which I do not care to discuss at the

The flood situation !n England is be
coming increasingly serious. The city
of Norwich, ninety miles northaat of
London, is almost isolated. ' All trains
service between London and Norwich
and Cromer has been suspended. The
enlre county of Norfolk is a twamp

Two suits were filed in San Fran
cisco today by the United Stated
against Charles Nelson Company, and
the Pacific Surety Company for failing
to deliver lumber under contract for
the army in Honolulu. The govern
ment asked for 15794 damages.

sent by the navy department;, to the

The oil steamer Rosecrans was
totally destroyed by fire -day at Ga
viota, following: an explosion in her
boiler room. The crew of forty-two
men escaped with their lives by jump
ing into the sea and swimming, ashore.
The Rosecrans was owned by the As
sociated Oil companies and - the loss
is estimated at 180,000.
-The old naval ram Katahadin will
te fired upon by vessels of the Atlan
tic fleet during target practice ealy
in September. The tests art planned
