WHITE HOUSE BEING
THOROUGHLY RENOVATED.
Washington, Sept. 21. Mrs.
Roosevelt and her six children will
join the President In tho White Houso

rival the historic mansion is under
going an internal cleaning sueh as It

New carpets and mattings aro be
ing laid all over tho house. The
public parlors have been redecorat
ed and tho private apartments, too,
aro being renovated and partly re
furnished. The exterior has recently
been given a new dress of glistening
white, and tho iron trimmings are
bright with lfcw gilt. It is likely
that the spacious attic will be fitted
up as a playroom and gymnasium for
tho Roosevelt children.
Mrs. Roosevelt is now superintend
ing the closing up of her handsome

rough housewife, she personally sup
ervised the arrangements for the ac

Notwithstanding the fact that the
committee appointed for appraising
the respective values of the floating

not been ableito progress any further
owing o tho absence of a number of

four of the Wilder steamers aro of
steel while thelutcr-lsland steamers
aro of wood tho Wilder steamers
wore valued at SI, 000 more than the
other eomyany's. The proposed con
solidation, which will bo made with a
view to reducing tho expenses of
maintaining two managements, will
thus not be progressing before the
return of tho large stockholders;
