Mrs. A. N. Kepoikai, and Misses
Maggie and Emma Daniels returned
to Wailuku from Honolulu by this
week's Claudine.
Robert Slaughter of the Phoenix

Dr. Philip Frear, dentist, accom
panied by his wife, arrived from
Hawaii on Thursday night's Mauna
Loa, and will spend a week at Puu

Supt. of Public Works, Henry E,
Cooper was a passenger to Nahiku
on Wednesday returning to Wailuku
this morning, Ho leaves for Honolulu
this afternoon.
U. E. Hendricks, of the Monumen
& Iron Fence Co. Bojiolulu, after a
successful business trip to Hawaii
landed on Maui from last night's
Kinau and will spend several days
on the Island.
Attorney D. L. Case, who visited
Wailuku this week, with the view of
possibly locating here for the prac
tice of his profession lett for Honolulu
by Thursday's Mauna Loa, and will
return on next Wednesday's Claudine,
Frank H. Armstrong, C. T. Little
jahn and C. C. Couradt of Honolulu
paid a flying visit to Wailuku by last
Friday night's Kinau, and after enjoy
ing the hospitalities of our town on
Saturday, left for Honolulu by the
Claudine,
Mr. G. P. Wilder, accompanied by
Mrs. Noonan, Miss Gilford and Master
Charles Herbert, all of Honolulu, who
have been the guests of Dr. and Mrs.
Raymond at Ulupalaku for the past
two weeks spent this week at Wai
luku and left for Honolulu by last
night's Kinau.

Should a variety be found that will
resist the disease the question would
then arise as to its market valuo,
productiveness, keeping qualities,
etc. Thi'bughout the experiment the
Juno variety resisted the Quick
Blight the best. On other plots thau
those of the experiment station the
same observation was made. How
over, ropeated triuls would bo the
only means of determining whether
the resistance to this diseaso shown
by this variety during these prelimi
np.ry experiments was anything more
than accidental.
At present nono of thoso varieties
can bo definitely recommended, as
oue season's experiment is not con
clusive. Further experiments with
the four varieties which showed a
tendency to resistance (The June,
Honeoyo Rose, Maul's Thoroughbred
and Uncle Sam), aro to bo conducted
at Kula, Maui, during the coming
season. Attention will be given to
the prevention of Quick Blight by
the application of fertilizers, weep,
cultivation, audby treating the keed,
plauts nud infected soil with fun

SHIPPING NEWS
All tlic sugar that the local bouts
can bring in from the other islands is
being piled up in the holds of sailing
vessels as fast as the stevedores can
handlo the stuff. The Alumcda is
storing the saccharine wealth away
by the thousands ot bags and will
take a vnluabh; cargo of it to the
coast tomorrow. Every sailing ves
sel going to San Fruneheo takes
nway a big consignment, and the
Inter-island boats are kpt on doublt
runs, especially those plying between
Honolulu and Kauai, just to bring
the sugar off the latter island. Ii.

New Yoik, N. Y., March 10. Thr
steamship Karaniania arrived in
quarantine this morning from Mar
sfilles, reporting six dea'ha among
the passpngers, supposedly from
cholera. The ship carries 733 pas
f ngers and all on hoard have been
planed in quarantine.
On the way from Honolulu the
schooner Helene hud a dangerous
experience in a fierce gain, says a
San Francisco exchange of February
25. The wind rose suddenly at night.
and carried away one sail before tin
vessel could bo made readv to weath
er tho storm. In a twinkling the
sea rose until the waves towered high
over the schooner. The decks were
twice awash and every thing that
could be carried away was swept
into the sea.
Elizabeth, N. J Maroh 7. The
cruiser Chattanooga was launched
today. This vessel is ono of six, the
others being the Des Moines, Clove
land, Denver, Galveston' and Tacoma
Each is to cost $1,141,800.
Hackfeld & Co. this week tried a
new experiment, the success of which
promises well for tho extension of
Hilo trade. They made a shipment
of 50,000 feet of lumber and some
tons of merchandise by scows to
Punaluu, Kau, using tho tug Cbas
Counselman. The trip over was sue
cessfully made, the cargo being land
ed atter a 17 hour trip. Geo. Duncker
was admiral of the flotilla. Coming
home a sudden squall was encounter
ed which swamped one scow. This
was the only adverse experience of
the trip. Hilo Tribune. t
The Ship Fort George is expected
from Honolulu next week, to load
sugar at Kahului.
A private cable from San Fran
cisco state that the Siberia sailed for
Honolulu Thursday with a large pas
senger list. W. O. Smith is among
the passengers.
Hackfeld & Co., ageuts.received a
cable that tho Korea has sailed
from Yokohama for this port. She
has 1,100 tons of freight for Honolulu
and hor cabin passenger list is very
large.
