fQf The News runs a brie. review of t!io different candidates for
office, this week. In this review, no weight whatever is given to
politicul affiliation's, and in fact no eiiisideratioii influenced the
writer save the honest desire to secure t he best men for all the
offices. It would be only natural if tin- partisans of either party
find fault with some names suggested, and some may go to the
length of voting for their party imn without respect to their
qualifications 01 the principle that one should VoVe for a yaller dog,
if on his ticket. But is up to the conservative and thinking voters
of Maui to carefully study both tickets, and then unite in voting
for the best men, because once elected, it is not the fact that they
are republicans or home rulers, but rather their ability to till the
offices to which they are elected tiat will chiefly interest tho peo
ple of Maui.
o -
Some time since, the News suggested that "a $10,000 stock
company in Honolulu organized for the purpose of handling Island
vegetables and produce alone, would not only drive out California
vegetables, but would also largely promote vegetable culture on
the Islands. A small beginning in this direction has been in
auguraterl by Bvrcn O. Clark of Wahiawa colony on Oahu.who has
established a siaull business in Honolulu for the purpose of -handling
island produce from all the Islands. If the business is de
Veloped to its full possibilities there is every reason to believe that
the island steamers will grant such concessions as will permit the
shipment to Honolulu from all the Islands in cold storage, of large
amounts of small fruits, berries, and tender vegetables. Some
years since the Kinau put in a cold storage room for this purpose,
but had to take it out for lack of patronage. Try it ag 'in, Kinau.
Since the last issue of this paper, news has been received of
the passing away of two of the most noted men of Honolulu, Judge
Morris M. Estee and Hon. Robert Wilcox. The mention of these
two names is one breath carries a profound object lesson with it, to
thoughtful men. ' Judge Eslee's life on the Islands was like the
light of a rising and revivifying sun, bearing in its rays and
warmth the new light of all that was broadest and noblest and best
in American manhood, and his influence will long survive his per
sonal remembrance, for what he has done in leading the people of
the Islands toward the true ideals of American citizenship. With
the passing away of Robert Wilcox, there will be buried the last
remnants of days and times and ambitions that belonged to the
old order of things on the Islands, because, while we may have
other Estees, we can, never again have another Robert Wilcox.
jQf Lahaina has lost one . of its' most attractive features in the
colony of Gilt or,t Islanders who have left for their old home. These
Islanders were in the 'main a sober and industrious people whose
skill in hat making, and mat work was much in demand to supply
the trade which they had built up, and at which they prospered
for many years. It is a serious
was wise to induce these.people to
successful business at.Labaina,
childhood where they will now feel
jj$ The Hawaiian Star strenuously opposes the idea of allowing
the use ot the capitol building and a, state funeral for the late
Robert Wilcox, and offers strong and excellent reason to sustain
its position. After all however, it is a matter of sentiment rather
than of reason, and if it will be any satisfaction to the devoted
followers of their lost leader, they, should be permitted the use of
the throne room and all the paraphernalia available for the-pui-poses
of a state funeral. It would be a potty act co deny them this
much. . ' i ' ' ' '
5 Tho fact that a sure lantana destroyer, a "dark -colored fly .about
the size of an ordinary house fly, but less gauzy and infinitely more
business like in appearance," has .been introduced on the islandg, and
will n the next few years entirely destroy the generative power of
the lantana is very encouraging not; onlj so far as the destruction
of lantaua is concerned, but also as an object lesson in what intel
ligent efforts can accomplish in the matter of combating other
pests OA the Islands. . , ...
jj$ Before the next copy of the News is issued the people of Maui
will have selected the men who are to conduct county affairs for
the ensuing year. Trus, it will be for one year only but every
thing will be new and strange, and many knotty problems will
arise. For this reason, all prejudice should be laid aside, and the
very best men should be selected. ' Voters, think about this, be
fore you mark your ballots.
Q The tourist travel proposition is now, being handled intel
ligently, and there is no doubt but
visit the Islands this winter, and
11 tne pioneer arrivals repon iavoraoiy. qi tnetr visit.- jno1 pains
should be spared to help the firs arrivals to' have a royal good
time.
