constructing a road Wailuku to lao;
Kipahulu to Kahihinui; Waihee
towards Honokohau; bridge and

grand entertainment, will be given

KIHEI KOMMENTS.
Kihei sportsmen formed a gun club
' last week of twelve members and elected
R. J. Bell Captain and W. A. Sparkes
Secretary and Treasurer. At the shoot
Sunday in manager Scott's yard nine of
the twelve members participated, the
lowest score beiug 50 per cent. Captain
Bell's was 90 per cent and manager Scott
85 per cent.
The shoot tomorrow will be held at
Camp 3, and every Sunday they will
alternate between Camp 1 and Camp 3.

medical practitioner, arrived on the Mau
na Loa last week. He is a graduate of
one of the best Canadian Universities,
and has been quite successful in his pro
fession in Ohio and elsewhere. Desiring
a warmer climate, he has passed the last
few months in the San Bernardino Valley,
Cal. Mr. Burt is a cousin of Miss A. Z,
Hadley.
The Japanese celebrated their victory
with much enthusiasm on Sunday even
ing. Delegations from five or six camps
took part in the display, several tasteful
designs being in the procession. One of
them represented a battleship. It was
about 20 feet long, and the frame work
was covered with white muslin. The
large guns were composed of tin cans.
The Admiral was on board, with his
marine glass. The Mill Camp exhibited
a peculiar structure, with two decorated
houses, a hexagonal clock and handsome
lanterns. Another attractive feature was
the patriotic exhibit, decorated with flags
and lanterns, from Kauaula gulch. The
procession was formed in Courthouse
Park, ,and marched to the. Pioneer Mill
and. elsewhere, roman candles, fire
crackers and hearty cheers were suitable
accompaniments. ' It is rumored that
Acting Manager Scrimger generously
sent to a supply of saki to each of the
camps.
Dr. Charles Davison is a passenger on
the Alameda. ' He will go directly to
Detroit Mich., to settle the estate of his
father, who died several months ago.
Manager Gibb is in Honolulu for a few
days. The Olowalu engineer is also away.
Mr. Sturtevant has resigned his position
at the Lahainaluna School, and took pas
sge for Honolulu on Thursday.
The Kindergarten term will close
on Friday, June 16. On June 24
Viss N. A. Holden and Mrs. Gannon
expect to go to Honolulu, and from
that port they will sail for the
mainland.
Fred H. Hayselden and his sister
have been visiting friends on Lanai
It is expected that the extension
of the wharf will be completed in
another week. .
Mr. Robert Ford has returned
home from a long stay in Frisco and
his friends are glad to see him look
ing so well. Mr, Roendal also re
turned from his vacation trip Tues
day night and judging by his looks
the trip did him a whole lot of good
Mrs. Wall, Mr. Mito, and Mr.
Duier will leave for Honolulu Thurs
day night. Mrs. Waal will remain
away for two months.
Miss. Hattie and her mother Mrs.
Keanu Miss Mab'.e Waiuholi lias
had a very bad attack of fever.
Mrs.' Mollie Cummings and son
are spending a few weeks, with Mrs'
Hayselden down by the sea side.
Mr. A. T. Atkinson from Honolulu
was taken suddenly ill at the La
baiualuna school exercises.
Miss McCann took a flying trip to
Kanului visiting Mrs. Kinney Tues
day. The Republican Candidates went
to Molokai and returned by Kinau
Thursday all smiling and well pleased
with their trip.
The base ball. teams had a meeting
Monday night and agreed not to play
any league games on June 11. The
Pioneer team will challenge the Junior
Morning Stars of Wailuku and the
llima a picked team from the rest of
the Lahaina teams. Music will be
furnished by the Lahaina Glee Club
and a real good day is expected. All
Wailuku invited.
The Republican Precinct Club held
a meeting at the tisb market last
week, Thursday. Quite a large and
enthusiastic crowd . attended the
meeting and every speaker was well
received.
A luau and fair will be given by the
Lahaina Ladies Thursday afternoon
from 2 till 7 p. m. for the benefit of
the Wainee Church.

Notick Of Teacher's Examanations
On Thursday and Friday, August loth
and nth there will be held at the High
School building, Honolulu, and at Hilo
and Holualoa, Hawaii; Wailuku, 'Mai i,
arid Lihue, Kauai, examinations of can
didates for Teacher's Primary Grade
Certificates.
The subject in which candidates will
be examined are written Arithmetic,
English Crammer, Spelling, Reading,
Dictation, Geography, Composition,
Physiology, Penmanship, Method of
Teaching, Drawing and Music (Tonic-Sol-Fa-.)
An average standing of 85 per cent,
or more will entitle a candidate to a
First Class Certificate, an average of 75
per cent, or more to a Second Class Cer
tificate, and an average of 65 percent, or
more to a Third Class Certificate.
First Class Certificates are good for
three years, Second Class for two years
and Third Class for one year.
