At a meeting of the Chamber of
Commerce held yesterday it was
voted to have tho regular meetings
every two months instead of quarter-
A letter was rood from Sonator
Dryden of New Jersey, president of
tho Prudential Life Company, reco-
mendating Federal supervision of
life insurance companies. This was
endorsed by tho Chamber.
Tho committee chosen tho day
before to cable to tho widow of the
late H. Aloxander Isenborg of H.
Hackfeld & Co., Ltd., and to address
a letter to the firm, to oxpress the
sympathy of the Chambor at the loss
of Mr. Isouberg, reported that it
had carried out tho suggestions.
An important matter discussed
was that respecting tho oil compa
nies which have tanks in tho Iwilel
district. The Chamber decided to
ask tho companies what they pro
posed to do concerning tho recomen
dations of tho Chambor of Commerce
with respect to taking steps to
minimize any possible disaster to
shipping in case of firo occurring in
any of tho tanks.
At the last meeting of tho Cham
ber a committee especially appointed
to look into this subject reported
that the companies should throw up
an earthwork around their tanks, so
that if a fire broko out and the oil
escaped, it could not float into Kail
hi Bay and thence to the harbor,
where shipping would be endanger

Arc Sugar Magnates At Swords
SAN FRANCISCO, OCt. 24.
The Chronicle says todoy: The
relations hitherto existing between
the Western Sugar Refinery, con
trolled by tho Spreckels interests
and the sugar planters of the Hawa
iian Islands have bsen ruptured.
Tho planters have acquired a con-
trollinir Interest in the refinery n.1
Crockett, Cal., which for some years
has been closed undor payment by
the trust of a big indemnity,
and are making preparations to oper
ate tho plant in competition with
tho Western Sugar Refinery.
They will refine the sugar which,
if the old contract bad boen renewed,
would have been sold to the Spreck-
eis concern. This product amouuts
to about 150.000 tons for the season.
To keep its plant going, tho West
ern Sugar Refinery will now be com
pelled to buy raw sugar in Java aud

the Spreckels interests and the
ibiand growers, looking to a renewal
of tho agreement. The rotik on

sugar landed in San Francisco, as
compared with selling price in New

arrived Thursday A M. from Hono
lulu and coast ports twith 3500 tons
