LOCALS
A largo number of cases x-ns be
fore District Magistrate McKay tins
week. They included larceny, assault
and battery and ethers.
The citizens of Psia are trying to
raise funds to erect a social hall for
social purposes.
This is a good cause and deserve
support.
The new residence bring erected
on Main Street by W. T. Robinson Is
one of the best in town. It is almost
completed.
Mrs. Schraeder is making a num
bcr of much needed Improvements at
the Wailuku Hotel, including the
erection of new cottages.
Sasaki of Paia was arrested Tues
day for soliciting immigration without
a license.

ty (o order these things and
charged to the County. The Sup
erintendent of Public works in
foims me that there is no available
appropriation in the Territory for
this work. I would point out that
a railing also should also be pro
vided at this landing, as it will be
used chiefly at night and it is very
likely that passengers might fall
into deep water in the unprotected
condilion of the wharf as it Is.
This work, it Beems to me, should
bo charged either to Wailuku Dis
trict or to the County in general.
While the ladding is in the Laha
ina District it is used but very lit
tle, if at all, by residents of Laha
ina. Plans for the road at McGregor'?
have been prepared, and it is de
sired by the Public Works Depart
ment to advertise for bids as soon
as possible. It is estimated that
the work a little more than the
amount-of the Territorial appro
priation, and I recommend that
Board appropriate $500 to be used
on this work.
' LA1IAINA DISTRICT.
The construction of the relocated
line from Honolua towards Napili
is being parried on satisfactorily
and 1900 feet of this road are
nearly completed. As this meeting
comes so close to the first of the
month, the overseer's report from
Lahaina has not yet been received
bo that costs of the work under
way over there are not at hand.
Preparations for macadamizing
as authorized at the last meeting
are blocked waiting for the rotary
screen which has been ordered from
the Coast, but the crusher and en
gine have been set up and a con
siderable quantity of rock crushed.
Before macadamizing can be cm ied
forward, however, a number of drains
must be put in this road, which I be
lieve can best be dune by means of
concrete pipe. Steel forms for mak
ing this pipe have been ordered from
Honolulu and will probably be receiv
ed this week. This pipe is coming
into very extensive use in Honolulu
and on the Mainland, and has prov
en very satisfactory and economical.
Another matter in conjunction with
macadamizing is a curbing which will
be required on this class of street.
The best available stone for this
purpose is to be found in the -old
building on the grounds of the Samuel
Nowlein Estate, and an offer has
been made to James L. Coke, Admin
istrator of said estate for the pur
chase of this stone.
Material for Honokawai bridge has
been landed at the site and work
fceuun.
Material for the Ukumehame
bridge has also beeu received at Olo
walu, ai d will be taken to the site on
the railroad, and the bridge will be
completed this month. This bridge
will be an all concrete steel bridge
and will be a permanent structure
not affected by the wear and tear of
travel, nor excessive floods and will do
away with a very troublesome cross
ing.
I find that my work wilt be ex
oedited verv considerably if, from
time to time, I may have tUp pnvl
lege of employing an assistant who is
able to run levels, make tracings
and do other simple detail work
which requires no great amount of
skill, tut takes my time from otne
more important matters. 1 shall no
have need of an assistant tor con
tinuouslv service but upon several
occasions throughout the year.
The Tool Reports which were au
thorized printed at the last meeting
have been prepared and rilled out by
the various road overseers, and here
with presented.
A set of brands and dies for mark
ing all of our tools has been procured
and 'he work of marking all of the
County property hpgah.
As considerable delay is experienced
n getting leports from the road
overseers on time, I would suggest
hat they all be furnished with stump
d ur d ailili esst-d i-nvrl uies, thus re-
ucing the pnsMb'e erenses for delay.
Now that mutters of organization
of the forces enaed in road and
bridge work is about perfected, I
rust that the actual work of con-
tuction will proceed with much more
rapidity hereafter.
Respecfullv submitted.
HUGH HOWELL,
County Engineer.
