SATURDAY,
Advertiser's Jubilee The Pacific Commercial Advei ti.sur of
Number. Honolulu has commemorated its til-
tieth anniversary by issuing a J ubilee number that is a credit to
the pioneer paper in the Territory.
On July second, 1856, that paper issued its tirst number and has
continued to prow in size and influence until today it stands at the
head of journalism in the Territory.
Many are the changes noted by the paper since that day. At
that time Honolulu was a little village, hardly known on the map,
ana those who have figured so prominently in the development i f
the islands were but children.
The industries that have made the islauds what they are, were but
dreams at that time and have all been brought to prominence Ciince
the little paper began its career.
That this paper has had much to do with moulding the tlioagl t
of the community during the past fifty years cannot be denied,
and that much is due it for its help must be conceded.
Any newspaper of general circulation exerts a greater or less
influence for good or for evil, and it must be a source of satisfac
tion to its owners to know tbut the balance on toe books of pub
lic opinion is in their favor.
May our valued contemporary continue to grow in the future as
it has in the past.
The Races at Kahului. The races at Kahului on the Fourth
of July were among the best ever held on this island and seemed
to give universal satisfaction.
An unusually large attendance was on hand and the most orderly
crowd seen anywhere for years. Many people who attended for
the first time expressed surprise at the good behavior of all
present. On an occasion of this kird one naturally expects to see
some misbehavior but not so at Kahului.
- The races were fairly run and no charges of jobbery made. This
is a most healthy sign for nothing will so soon disgust the people
as trickery. The officers of the Association are all men of high
standing and the manner in which they conducted the races was a
credit to themselves and greatly to the advantage of the Associa
tion. Few people are so dead as not to enjoy the exciting contests
between good horses and those who attended the races this year
were all thoroughly satisfied with the day's sport.
The contests were strictly of a local nature as the purses were
not large enough to justify the expense of bringing Honolulu horses
here. This also made jobbing less of a temptation and was far
more satisfactory to all.
If the Association will continue to carry on the meetings each
year in the future as they did this one they will do much to develop
speedy horses here and afford much pleasure to the whole popula
tion on the island.
Kahului on the Map. A few weeks ago the Pacific Commer
cial Advertiser discovered that Kahului is on the map, and. for her
further enlightment we would call her attonlion to the fact that
during the month of June alone she shipped from this island car
goes to tho extent of seventeen thousand two hundred tons
at a value o $1,169,352.39.
During the month of June there was not a day that there were not
foreign vessels in port, and the rapid manner in which they were
loaded and unloaded would make the people stare. Honolulu has
had the advantage of getting all the shipping in the past, but on
the completion of the breakwater that is now being pushed to
completion with private fuuds, she will build docks and extend
her railroad to them and be in as jrood a position to handle foreign
freight as Honolulu, and will not only take care of her own, but will
biclfor the freight of the other islauds.and will get such deep water
vessels as Honolulu cannot accommodate, and then the A' vertiser
will certainly discover that she is on the map.
There is not a port on the islands where so much freight is
haudled, according to her facilities as at Kahului in the short time
that it takes the enterprising people at Kahului to handle it, and
with her increased facilities she will handle freight more rapidly
and more cheaply than any port in the group.
Politics of Doubt- During the past ten days or two weeks
Jul Propriety. most persistent-rumors have been circu
lated to the effect that some of the members of the Republican
Party had left the ranks and joined those of tho Home liule Party.
Such rumors never permanently injure those about whom they
have been circulated but act as a boomerang to those who circulate
them.
In the present instance County Sheriff Saffery and Maurice Keo.
hokalole are two who have been singled out to make such charges
against and it seems that each have teen slated for positions in the
Home Rule Party.
From present indications it would do no one any good to receive
a nomination at their hands, which probublj accounts for the lavish
manner in which they are handing out the empty honors.
It would certainly be to the interests of the Home Rule Party to
take from the Republican Party as many of her strong men as she
could; but it is a long way in the distance when trie Homo Rulers
will carry the day at an election.
